If I hadn’t had Italian, Columbian, Cuban, or German coffee before I suppose I’d think this shop produces some good product. For southern England this coffee seems like nectar of the gods. However given my debatable snobbery of the espresso arts, that is not the case with Jolliffes. Keeping it short, the coffee I’ve had here several times have always been of poor quality for two reasons: first is that my espressos always seem watered down, second is that the type of beans they use must not come from a reputable source. Or rather, there’s no telling what kind of surprise tastes you may get brewed in whether it be pesticides or over-roasted beans. The best thing about this place is obvious right in the door: the ambiance. Art galleries and coffee shops share a symbiotic relationship and one that goes extremely well together. The art on the walls is local, nothing you wouldn’t see in any other tourist town to be honest, but they are well done from hobbyists branching out into professionalism.(I can definitely claim to be an art snob because I’m a classically trained artist/designer). Jolliffe’s deserves a lot of credit for trying to serve a special coffee experience in a nation of tea drinkers. But alas I’m feeling it’s all for not.
