china chef is a really nice chinese restaurant, the food is delicious — no complaints at all! just wish that they delivered!

Friendly welcome. We had aubergine stuffed with prawns in black bean sauce, sweet and sour pork and a special fried rice. The rice had duck in it which was a nice change. Ordered jasmine tea and got a large pot, both the pot and our tea cups were refilled while we ate without asking. No complaints at all. Crouch street is handy for town or it’s a minute’s walk from St Mary’s car park.

Consistently the best Chinese in Colchester and has been for 25 years

Having eaten at this restaurant a number of times over the past couple of years it seems to vary in quality depending on certain factors.
The staff are generally attentive, although only if the restaurant is fairly quiet. Having eaten here on two busy occassions we were left waiting for almost 10 minutes to simply make a drink order. This should be offered immediately on seating in my view, having worked in restaurants.
The staff also seemed intent to get food out extremely quickly in between courses. Some on our table hadn’t even finished their starters when the mains were literally thrust at us at lightning speed by a clearly overworked group of waiters. There should always be at least a 5 minute gap between courses.
The food quality is also affected according to how busy the place is. On my last visit I was distinctly unimpressed; the duck seemed overcooked and rubbery, whilst my prawn main course was flavourless and bland. I could’ve cooked better myself. Others on my table commented similar.
Having been previously on a Sunday, which was calm, the food was much superior to this.
If you do go, avoid a Friday or Saturday. Clearly the kitchen don’t like a full house.

An excellent restaurant with prompt, attentive service, gorgeous food and a wide-​ranging menu. Its town centre location belies the quiet, friendly surroundings.

I can heartily recommend this fabulous chinese restaurant; the food is always hot, delicious and fresh and the staff are polite and helpful (Ken the manager particularly so). The only slight downside is the restaurant’s location with regard to parking; more often than not you won’t be able to park right outside, but believe me, it’s worth the walk! We’ve been going here for all special family occasions for the last 20 years, which says something.
