There are quite a lot of takeaway places in the monklands area(Coatbridge & Airdrie) so the competition is always fierce. It’s no surprise then that the fountain ‘chippy’ has been around for quite some time(from what I’ve heard from friends and relatives that know the area better). The fountain does the usual fish and chip shop regulars such as fish suppers, sausage suppers, fried pizza etc but they also do some slightly healthier options such as pizzas and panini’s(maybe that’s why we spotted our doctor in there getting a Friday night takeaway — shh I never told you that). The busy Sunnyside road, leading up from the fountain roundabout(Which was moved from the roundabout, to main street, many years back and where the chippy obviously gets it’s name) and the cars parked near the busy local pubs(and the chippy itself), make crossing the road a challenge. Even if driving, finding a parking spot can be a gamble at busy periods(see my hint). As with all chip shops in the area, you can stock up on everything from headache tablets to your favourite soft drink or just some spare sauce /vinegar for the house. There’s probably loads more behind the counter but I’ve never taken the time to take a good look. The staff are efficient, sometimes a bit abrupt(what can you realistically expect on a busy weekend evening?), but the place always looks clean and inviting. We have tried a few chip shops in the area, including an award winning one, but always end up back at the fountain because the food is always fresh and tasty, which is why it’s our local(ish) chippy of choice.
