My partner and I stayed here for a civil ceremony recently, the whole of the hotel was given over to the event which made it a great location for the celebration. There are 22 rooms, some standard and some deluxe. We had a standard room which was £100 for a night(deluxe was £160). When you arrive at the hotel, you immediately get the feel of stepping back in time, the building is beautiful, and the grounds and car park very welcoming. A great first impression. I also liked the car park. It was laid with gravel, and made a wonderful crunching sound as we pulled up outside the venue. Check in was very efficient and friendly. We went to our room to get changed before the proceedings got underway. We were in the new(ish) annex of the property. The public areas you go though to get to the room were all very well appointed and looked comfortable and clean. The room itself unfortunately was quite a letdown. It felt as though you had gone back in time to the 70’s. Although a great size, the furniture and fixtures in the room was were so awful. The desk/dresser/wardrobe(an all in one unit) was cheap embossed chipboard pushed into the side of the room, with a old TV precariously teetering on the end. The three wall pictures were faded colour litho grams of poppy’s, the carpet which was lime green and cheap, had little to no underlay. The bed was ok, although very noisy and somewhat lumpy. The bathroom was good though, but again the fixtures in there were just all so cheap, like a job lot from B&Q had been procured! I hate not having mixer taps on a sink! OK so the room was a bit of a letdown(I actually feel sorry for the room as it was so ugly, when it could have been a lovely place to lay your head!), especially give the price I was paying and the grandeur of the place overall, but the rest of the stay was very good. What makes this place is the staff, all excellent. They were tentative, friendly and good fun. The food we had at the venue was also very nice. It was a sunny day and the gardens were fantastic to sit in to sip Champagne. Bar prices seemed a little pricey, when you are there all day and having to buy drinks, it starts to add up. I noticed that many people had smuggled in their own contraband alcohol to keep cost downcan’t say I blame them! All in all a nice place to stay, and a great venue for a wedding or Civil Partnership, but could do with a bit of refurbishing in the ‘normal rooms’
