Home of Chesterfield’s famous «crooked» spire, which was added to the tower in the 14th century. A stunning 228 feet tall, which is amazing when you think that it was built in 1362.
It is «crooked» for two reasons. First is the twist, which was apparently by design. The second is that back in those days, there weren’t too many skilled craftsmen. The Black Death killed lots of people, donchaknow.
I didn’t go in, I just stopped to take pictures. So I can’t tell you what the inside looks like or how the services are.

The crooked spire of the church is a well known attraction in Chesterfield. When it was built it wasn’t meant to be crooked, but over time it bent and is now quite a pretty sight. It is located right next to the tourist information, so it could be your first tourist stop. It’s not worth making a special trip to Chesterfield for though.

If you’re in Chesterfield you must try and take advantage of the tour of the ‘crooked’ spire church of St Mary and All Saints. The verger who took our tour was friendly and fearless in his assent of the tower and spire. It’s not a climb for the fainthearted but the views are great and the kids loved it.
