Good location with helpful serving staff. Beer was good. Floor was dirty. With empty glasses and uncollected plates. bouncers was busy talking to there mates. And glared at everybody entering menacingly.

To be completely honest, for me the slug and lettuce is two completely separate places. I always go here for drinks if I’m in Chester because as far as I know the cocktails here are cheaper than anywhere else, because of the 2 for 1. There’s a lively atmosphere, the music is always good, and there’s lots of seats. Only negative in this respect is that you’ll almost definitely wait a very long time at the bar if you’re there on Thursday Friday or Saturday night. As a restaurant, the food is average, the service is extremely slow but they have good deals on food so it works out to be good value. I think their biggest problem is that they always appear to be understaffed, but generally I always really enjoy myself when I go.

Admittedly it was a Saturday night, but when we visited the Slug and Lettuce it was absolutely packed. After waiting patiently to get to the bar, we ordered a round drinks, from what was a fairly well stocked bar, both in range and quantity. There are seating areas, but they were all full and the only standing room left, was near to the door, consequently every time somebody came in or left, we felt like we were in the way. Maybe I should go back when its less busy to appreciate its charms, but on this occasion I was underwhelmed. Music wasn’t bad though.

On the plus side the seats are comfortable. Otherwise this place is an overpriced disaster simply waiting to pounce (albeit very, very slowly!) any mistaken members of the population who decide to eat there. The décor is tired and very worn. The service is diabolical, verging on surly. The food is elderly if not pensionable, and the serving dish used for our vegetarian platter was not clean. Do not go there to eat!

a trendy bar serving a good selection of beer and wine and a comprehensive menu of good quality. Can be a little on the pricey side, but they do take Tesco ClubCard vouchers. Can be a good atmosphere at night, always packed.

There isn’t much soul to this place — although it always tends to be quite busy. The drinks and food on offer are standard and probably a little overpriced — though they are obviously consistent with the rest of the chain.
The one thing it does have going for it in my opinion is that they keep the food area very seperate from the drinks area. This means that you could go in on a busy Saturday night — and if you just wanted to eat, you could still do in a fairly relaxed environment without having people bumping up against your chair all of the time.
Of course, it could be argued that this is detrimental to the rest of the bar, as it severely limits the seating available and means that things get even more crowded at the front.

The Slug and Lettuce in Chester, doesn’t have that much going for it. It provides the same standardised pub grub and drinks offers as the rest of the chain, and the food isn’t really up to much. Although they change parts of their menu each season, the vegetarian options are limited to around 3 choices. One of these was the most basic of pasta dishes, with tomato sauce and cheese on it — the sort of thing you could make at home for less than 80p, but that they were charging ten times that for. When we visited the food took an age to arrive and then we had to wait nearly 40 minutes to get our pudding, which it seems they had forgotten to order.
The space itself is bland and uninspired, it’s a soulless chain affair, the like of which is all too common.
