I was so happy when this gorgeous cottage at Tatton Park was revamped into a quiet tea room. This is a great place to go for an early breakfast, especially in the summer sitting in the little garden facing out onto the orchard — the poached eggs aren’t bad either. The menu is simple and well priced, fruit and vegetables grown on the estate are used wherever possible in the days selection of specials and freshly baked cakes. The chocolate fudge cake warmed with ice cream is pretty epic. The coffee here is very good, but there is a slight downside to the loose leaf tea — there’s no way to stop the tea from infusing further as the filter gets too hot to remove. The last half of my tea pot is always too bitter, but other than that I’ve found no flaws. The staff are cheery and helpful, the rooms are decorated with reproduction William Morris wallpapers and tea is served in a vintage tea cup. This place is full to the rafters most weekends and from about 12pm most days, so if you’re planning a special trip it’s worth making a reservation.
