Stopped in for a hot chocolate and a scone while waiting on the castle at Carrickfergus to open. We were the only ones in the shop and had a wonderful visit with the owner and the manager. The atmosphere was was wonderful, the hot chocolate and scone were just what we needed on a misty day, and the hospitality of Mrs. Rendell and Mrs. Black made the whole experience the perfect start to a great day.

Had lunch here with my daughter, son-in-law and baby grandson. It was a little crowded but we were able to find a spot in the corner near the door with room for a high chair. Two of us are vegetarians and enjoyed generous slices of veggie quiche and helpings of a few different salads, and the other member of our party enjoyed the chicken pie. Everything looked great here — fresh and authentic. People were friendly and we also enjoyed walking around the beautiful courtyard garden and checking out some of the other Courtyard shops. I definitely want to visit here again on my next trip to Northern Ireland!

The Courtyard is a quaint, old fashioned area of the town, and despite being a local, it was somewhere I didn’t know an awful lot about until I happened to be working in an office next to it at one stage, and started to visit at lunchtimes. They do a wide selection of hot and cold foods(Their quiche is amazing) along with the usual sandwiches, paninis, salads, baked potatoes, and so on. They also have a good range of sweet things, including some marvellous looking ‘designer’ cupcakes. I haven’t tasted them as I am trying to be good, but they do look lovely! The Courtyard is a bit pricey, if I recall correctly my quiche with side salad came to close to £6(not including any drinks) but the will give you a discount if you are getting the food to take away. This said, the quiche is extremely tasty, so in my opinion it is worth every penny!

Attractive little coffee shop facing the Marina Highway, about a 2 minute walk away from the seafront itself. Although it doesn’t have the largest of menus, it has lots to recommend it — not least its great location at the entrance to a courtyard with lots of interesting boutiques. Lunch food is quite traditional, with different pies/quiches each day, served with fresh salads or a choice of veg & potatoes. Definitely a lighter choice for lunch than some of Carrick’s other food establishments! For elevenses/afternoon tea they do a nice selection of coffees, divine cakes, shortbread & scones. You can also place an order for a whole cake if you want one for a special occasion, or happen to be especially greedy…

Visitors to Carrick often miss this place and, believe me, the Courtyard is well worth a visit for the very attractive shops within its surrounds and the Coffee House is at the entrance. It can be found approx 200 meters from the Townhall just beyond the Coast Road Hotel on Scotch Quarter. Excellent for morning coffee or that light lunch that ladies who lunch talk about. Beware, though, there are lots of tempting goodies ot choose from, you might have to blow the diet!
