For the young crowd on budget and looking for some cheap, good food after a night of drinking(or about to start drinking), Tony’s is the place to go. It definitely has more of a local, almost hole-in-the-wall feel to the outside, but it is a yummy treasure when you order the chicken and curry with chips special. The man who served us(wish we could remember his name) was super personable and friendly; he poured the curry(it was like a gravy for my fellow Americans) fresh on top of the chicken and a pile of chips, and it was incredibly tasty. Yeah, it was greasy and certainly not the lightest of foods to eat, but it was a fantastic comfort food and can definitely satisfy a hungry stomach. Perfect drinking food!

I must preface this review by saying that I am from the States, so maybe my tastebuds are different from those of UK residents. After being in the UK for 3 weeks, I finally tried my first batch of fish and chips in this region. In the States, I am used to well-seasoned fish and chips that are not bathed in grease, so I was not pleased at all with this meal. Both the greasy chips and the fish had a weird taste with a lack of seasoning(even after asking for salt). Everything was so greasy, I had to put a piece of the fish in a napkin to soak up the grease. The food was so horrible, that after only 2 bites of the chips and one bite of the fish, I had to throw everything away. I am shocked that this place is rated so highly… makes me somewhat hesitant to try other fish and chip places in the UK… somewhat :D.

Caroline Street still feels like a bit of a novelty to me — an alleyway lined with fish and chip shops that cater to drunken revellers night after night? Marvellous. If you can handle the variety of inebriated customers that grace its doors, you’ll find Tony’s Fish and Chip Bar to be one of the consistently tastiest shops on this stretch, with queues typically stretching outside the door come 2 am. It’s worth the wait though, seeing as most of us require a stodgy re-up before a long walk or taxi ride home. I’m not man enough to try the renowned chicken, curry and chips just yet, but I’m happy to report that I’m always satisfied with my massive portion of chips, which can’t be downed without with a healthy dousing of salt and a Diet Coke. The service is normally friendly and efficient, and I’m always amazed at their ability to extract an order from a slurring customer and still manage to keep a smile.

I feel bad for the other companies on this street; when faced with the dual juggernauts of Tony’s and Dorothy’s, they don’t stand much of a chance. Sure, most of them have managed to survive for a sizeable amount of time by picking at the scraps these two have left behind, but at 4am, there’s really no competition. You walk up Chippy Lane and the only question is «Dorothy’s or Tony’s?» In fact, the only reason any other chippy on Caroline Street gets any business is because those two often end up so packed with customers, potential punters give a disheartened sigh and«may-as-well» their way to one of the lesser shops. And it’s a reputation that’s well deserved. At 4am on a Sunday morning, a chippy could get away with serving chips made of wood shaving and cutting kebab meat off a rotisserie pigeon and most of the punters would be none the wiser. Tony’s doesn’t do this. Instead, they serve some truly excellent fish and chips(I don’t speak this highly of artwork; clearly I have issues). They are very proud of their chicken curry off the bone, and they should be; it’s good stuff. It’s their sausage and batter in chips that is where it’s at, though. Getting that in your stomach is the perfect ending to a wasted evening.

Tony’s is a classic city centre fish and chip bar, located on Caroline Street — which was always referred to by locals as ‘Chip Alley’ until it was tarted up a few years back(around the time when Brewery Quarter opened). Caroline Street is the top spot for Cardiff clubbers to congregate in the early hours to soak up some of their alcohol and cure their late night munchies. Tony’s and Dorothy’s both do the job well, and generally have queues snaking out of the door during their peak periods, but Tony’s is best known for its chicken curry and chips — a hot favourite. They also have pies, battered sausages, fish cakes, battered plaice, kebabs, and even falafels for vegetarians. One other thing about Tony’s is the fact that the staff deal so well with all the drunken people they face night after night! I guess they’ve built up a thick skin, but still they always manage a smile even on the rowdiest of nights.

Its 3am on a Saturday night and you roll out of a club a little bit drunk and in desperate need of food. If your in Cardiff then the only place your likely to end up is Chippy Lane and Tony’s would be my pick for a late night snack, or actually for fish and chips anytime of the day. I have many hazy memories of Tony’s, its always busy but they do the best chips and chicken curry in town. The service is always really quick so you won’t have to wait around for ages for them to fry your chips and whats more any weird craving you have like chips, curry and beans mabye, they’ll be happy to give you. I have also have fish and chip from here in the day and soberness doesn’t change my opinion. The chips are perfect chippy chips and the fish is lovely. Maybe its not the classiest place to eat but its great value for money and never lets me down!

Brilliant place to go after a night out of even just for a quick fish and chip supper one night. Chicken curry of the bone and chips is to die for, great banter from the staff and willing to cater to any whim you have. Fab takeaway on chippy lane and fab prices.

Great to place to eat after a night out on the town. It has the best Chicken Curry off the bone and chips. There is nearly always a queue because it is the best in Caroline Street.

Its always a toss up between dorethy’s and tony’s! These are the 2 main chippy’s on chip alley and the most frequaently visited on a night out in cardiff, and when only risole and chip and battered sausage will do! Tony’s alwasy tends to win for me, THe chips are great and realy crunchy, and you get them in a wrapped paper cone. Just how they should be. If youve had a few on st marys and need some good food, head to chippy alley and tonys!

Tony’s Fish Bar, located on Caroline Street in the heart of Cardiff, is the ideal way to conclude a big night in the city. With a large range of foods available, including pies, saveloy’s, battered sausage(small and large), fish, fish cakes and chicken to name but a few, and of course kebabs. Tony’s has on offer the standard range of kebabs(including falafel for the vegetarians) and the doner’s here are very good. What keeps Tony’s kebabs apart from the rest are the sauces. The garlic and chilly sauce just take things to the next level. The garlic sauce is rich and creamy whilst maintaining a delicious garlicky flavor with a hint of mint. The chilly sauce, more of a chilly and barbecue sauce mix, adds a lovely tang to finish the kebab off. Foreigners, especially Taiwanese, seem to adore the chilly sauce. They also serve a mean curry and chips, and all this at very reasonable prices. For dinner or a late night feast or snack, Tony’s is the ideal place to prepare you for that night out or the morning to come. Enjoy!
