This pretty little shop is quite a find, nestled just out of sight of Wellified road, it is unusual and unlike anything else around the area. There are a number of gift shops around the area, places like Ushi’s offer an alternative pretty gift if that’s what you’re looking for, but Oriel has less pretention, less concern over its image. All the stock is hand crafted and there is a range of pottery, glass work and textiles — not to mention all sorts of other bric-à-brac. Each piece is to its own style, so don’t expect to love everything and the prices can be very high. I rather liked a hand-crafted pot but found the £65 price tag a little heavy. If you’re looking for something really different to get your girlfriend or Mother as a present then I’d suggest taking a look, you might be suprised what you find.

Run by the makers themselves this fabulous unpretentious gallery is exactly the place to buy that unusual gift. I used to be a member myself and all of us took turns running the shop. So any day you go in there you will find one of the craftspeople there to talk to. It’s cheaper than Craft in the Bay although some of the same makers are shown in both places. There’s pottery, glass work, photography, textiles, wood craft and more. Every month there is a new exhibition upstairs. The artists will take commissions for individual items. Molly is famous for her individual house plaques and numbers.

This is shop that has stock which has been locally made; it is all hand crafted and a bit pricey, but the craftsmanship of hard work and pure talent that has been carved into the glass is seriously unique and stunning. It is situated on a street that is near to the Albany Road and Wellfield Road area which are all in an area in Cardiff, which is called Roath. It is a small, pretty, and friendly gift shop. All items are ideal gifts for your girlfriends; fiancés, husbands, children, mothers, friends, and they could possibly be delightful presents for sisters too. There will be nowhere else inside the whole, big wide world that does sell the very same kind of products that this shop does sell. For it is one a kind; it’s own kind of crafty, gift shop. It never gets very busy at all and the service quick and immediate to your customer service requirements. They also have a fantastic gallery too… I recommend this to all crafty people; particularly women or it can be a good gift shop for those men who are buying gifts for women.

Oriel Makers is a beautiful little gallery in one of my favourite parts of town. It sells a really good range of contemporary crafts and fine art, including handmade cards, limited edition prints, paintings and multi-media originals, alongside ceramics, jewellery, glass, textiles and other maker-designed, hand crafted items using wood, metal and leather etc They are soon to celebrate their twentieth year, which is not surprising. This is a gallery that plays it smart, offering low cost, midrange and exclusive items for sale, which keeps the revenue streams reasonably consistent. Having weathered the recession of the early 90’s this gallery will no doubt survive the recession at the end of noughties! And all credit to them for that! With the global art market being dissembled wholesale by the catastrophic impact of the sub prime market and bank collapses, it is truly encouraging to see galleries like this one carry on regardless. Run by a collective of artists and crafts people, who all exhibit within the gallery, and take joint responsibility for the administrative burdens and associated costs etc, this is the intelligent way to pool resources and ideas, arriving at a much stronger end product. It is the first gallery run on this basis in Cardiff.
