I’ve only been here for lunch, and apparently that was the wrong time to experience it as it gets much better at night. I have to say though, I was so unimpressed by my lunchtime experience that I’ve never bothered to find out if it gets better. The first annoyance came when the only hot drink they served was coffee. The girl behind the bar seemed to think that I was absurd for expecting anything else. This put me in a bad mood before we’d even got to ordering food. The seating area was pleasant, but the tables were small and the seats were awkward to sit on. We waited ages for food(even though we’d only ordered simple things and the place was practically empty) and when it came it was cold and really not worth the whole depressing experience. There are so, so many better places to eat, and I have no doubt that there are better places to go for a drink in the evening, too.

Mordaith is sometimes a part of Oceana, but by day this is a separate food venue. It looks quite glam and stylish, the seats are welcoming and you would not even have imagined there were several students draped over the furniture downing Sambuca the night before. The food served up here is pretty good, I always enjoy my meal when I come here. Last time I came to this bar, I had the cajun chicken wrap, they serve it up with a good sized salad and some crisps, I really enjoyed this and would have it again. They do special deals here where you can get 2 meals for £9 with a drink, pretty good value, considering your surroundings are that of a slightly upmarket bar. I’d recommend that you get a seat in the area that is walled with windows, it is really light and you can watch the people walk by as you eat and drink. Drinks are a little pricey, but if you can just eat here or get the special deal, then it’s not too bad at all.

I’ve been here a few times, and it’s a fairly decent bar, but not anywhere I’d go out of my way for. Mordaith is like a more glamorous Wetherspoons than anything else. The drinks are really cheap, which is a major draw for me, but overall I’d say it’s nothing special. One of the best aspects though, is the outdoor seating area, where you can enjoy your pint on a warm summer’s day and people watch, if nothing else. In the winter time, these covered tables are a smoker’s shield from the cold rain and wind. Easy access to neighbour Oceana may or may not be a plus, but it offers a bit of diversity in any case. I’d recommend Mordaith for after-work pints with your mates or as a pre-club watering hole in preparation for a night of drinking in some of the better bars in town.

Funny little bar this one, popped into for a quick drink to check it out. Situated quite close to the New Theatre in Cardiff and around the corner from Greyfriars Road. The décor is a little unusual and feels like a cheap 1970’s hotel bar, for added effect there was Brat Pack music playing in the background which gave the place a lounge lizard ambience. In the way of drinks there was a cocktail menu listing all sorts of weird & wonderful concoctions. There was also a comprehensive meal menu to boot. Seemd quite busy when I called in and was able to purchase a pint of Guinness for the modest sum of £1.50(yes thats right). Will have to call back there at some point as the place is so surreal and with the cheap pint, was wondering if I was dreaming. Little off the beaten track but worth checking out all the same.

Also known as ‘Oceana 2′(apparently, I only found this little bit of information out yesterday), it is now open until 7am on a Saturday, when they start serving breakfast! This is incredible. I am not 21 yet so I can’t take advantage of this but when I am I definitely am! They serve lunch(and supper too I think) but they really excel as a bar. There is always karaōke going on there. However, please do be careful because it is quite common for fights to break out over a bad version of My Heart Will Always Go On. You may laugh but it’s a real problem. ‘My Way’ is apparently a major cause of karaōke murder. Look it up! Anyway, it’s great fun with the same low prices as the rest of Oceana. Also, because it’s all joined up, you can simply roll from one into the other.
