Heard of the Ivor Novello awards? Well they were named after a man who was born in Cardiff, at this very house. A standard Cardiff townhouse on the Cowbridge Road with a palm tree out front and a blue plaque. Ivor was born here on the 15th of January 1893. He grew up to become a well-known and loved Welsh composer, singer and actor… being a bit on the pretty side probably helped. Christened with the common-as-muck original name of David Ivor Davies, Ivor took a leaf out of his mother Clara Novello’s book by stealing the second part of her stage name, just as she had from the original Clara Novello herself. The town house name Llwyn-yr-Eos means Grove of the Nightingale, which seems apt, considering the musical family that inhabited it. Ivor is perhaps most famous for penning the wartime hit song ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ and his later musicals including Perchance to Dream(1945), King’s Rhapsody(1949) and Gay’s the Word(1951).
