This place is opened very late! I ordered a burger and fries, um, I mean chips, to go. The meal deal with a drink was just over five quid. The guy was slow as molasses but hte food was decent and nice to be able to satisfy a hunger brought on by too many beers in the local pub.

This most satisfying chip shop serves chips with curry sauce, as an antidote to excessive alcohol consumption is a must. As with most of the other fast food takeaways they have a range of fast food that is not implied by the name above the door; pizza, kebabs and burgers. I cannot say I would make any diversion to eat here, as there are much better out there. By specializing in fish & chips they may have carved out a spot in the city road, but the choice is clearly to walk by to Albany Fish Bar.

If you’re in Cardiff, you’ll find that City Road is a horrid little beast if you’re looking for some good and honest fish/sausage/sausage in batter and chips. This is the sole, single and only fish and chip shop on the entire street, and that fact is an absolute travesty. Luckily, the Five Star Fish Bar manages to make up for the lack of foresight on behalf of local business owners by being absolutely excellent at what it does. Due to constantly moving house, and my various excursions throughout the city, I’ve sampled most of the chip shops about the place and, whilst Shah and Albany Fish Bar take the top two place, Five Star isn’t far below. The food is the standard fish and chip fare, with an added generalist twist, in that they also dole out burgers, balti food, kebabs and, perversely, jacket potatoes. Of particular note is their curry sauce, which manages to be thick and creamy, and just spicy enough. If Shah and Albany Fish Bar burn down, these guys might make it into the top leagues.

Five Star Fish Bar is next to the Salt N Pepper Grill at the city centre end of City Road. Although they clearly like to establish the fact that they are a fish and chip shop by defining themselves as one, they also sell Doner and Shish Kebabs, burgers, jacket potatoes, pizza and Balti meals as well. They also do great snack foods like pakora and samosa. There’s something that I love about the better fish and chip shops in Cardiff, and that’s the fact that they offer an OAP special deal. I’m a long way off being an OAP myself, but this consideration for people who often live alone,(and are therefore presumably more disinclined to cook), who struggle by on a pension, and find the physical challenges of life a little more arduous, warms the cockles of my heart. Five Star Fish Bar do a smaller portion of fish and chips for £2.20 for the senior citizens of this area, which to my mind means that they’ve earned the ‘Five Star’ title that they given themselves. This is a great little take-away with really friendly staff. I wouldn’t buy my fish and chips from anywhere else along this road.

As the founder of the as yet not very popular but growing ‘Heath Mile’ pub trail, i find this modest chip shop with its own eating area at the back most satisfying. We call the senior chap here the ‘Chip Guru’ because of his obvious skills. I would recommend the chips in gravy, excellent snack as you walk to the next pub, in our case, The Roath Park. He deserves more fame.
