Driscol & Sons is a family butcher of distinction…(and in this case the term ‘distinction’ isn’t an hackneyed phrase of little meaning that I squander like confetti amongst my clichés!) This time it’s the most accurate word for the job in hand, and describes this family business to a tee! That’s enough of those pesky clichés eh?! These gentlemen provide the discerning customer with mouth-watering meats that can’t be bought just anywhere. With Woodland Pork, Free Range Chicks, Welsh Black Beef and Welsh Lamb, from some of the best farms in Wales, you’ll struggle to find the quality that they achieve here anywhere else. But, I’m almost more impressed by the hours that they keep. In order to offer the freshest meat you can buy, and to serve the catering industry,(some of the finest hotels buy their meats from here), these boys get up at ridiculous ‘o’ clock every morning. Mondays a breeze, with a lie in and a short day to look forward to(that’s 7.00am, scrubbed and dressed in their whites behind the counter, and then knocking off again at 1.00pm). Pah, part-timers! Tuesday to Friday they’re there at 6.30 till 5.30 and then back again at 6.00am on Saturday morning… 6.00am on a Saturday!!! It’s inhuman!

On Cathedral Road, this is another top notch local butcher who provide the protein in the lives of hundreds of nearby residents. And probably of those who live quite a way away too, actually. This family run business is very friendly with that kind of sense of community that only a good local store can provide. They know the regular customers by name and automatically start getting their orders ready. But if you’re not a local, you won’t feel excluding, instead you’ll be welcoming into the fold. This place is particularly good for their sausages. Also, they famously have queues going off down Cathedral Road a couple of days before Christmas for people after their turkeys. Now, this is a queue of people just to pick up the turkeys they pre-ordered weeks before, mind you. They’re just that good.

A traditional butcher with the added trendiness of being a beloved haunt of Welsh media luvvies from its Pontcanna environs. Always popular this place sells mainly free range and organic meats and the chaps behind the counter really know their stuff and have an old fashioned attitude to customer service — ie always interested in the health and happiness of their customers. Not cheap, but high quality fare.
