It’s not *bad* bad per-se, it’s just completely unremarkable as a pub and there are others nearby. Saying that, having about 20 televisions is a bit overkill and means that you can’t really relax and the toilets were, uhh, not that pleasant.

A Greene King pub with a couple of guest beers is as welcome as it unusual. They were Everards Tiger and Hopback Crop Circle. Having been myself brewed not too far from Everards and given that I was proudly sporting one of their polo shirts, the choice was kinda made for me! I was hungry as well as thirsty and they have some decent and reasonably priced food. My cheese, ham, tomato and red onion toasted sandwich was nice enough but the bonus was the chips that came with as they were more like fish and chip shop chips than the kind you usually find in a public house. There were too many TVs for my liking in this otherwise old fashioned pub, all showing different sports. I counted four in the end after wandering round the other side to the more foody section of the venue.

Good place to end the night because it’s open later, but it’s always hot and crowded with an occasionally obnoxious clientele by the end of the night(sometimes including my friends and me,) so I’m not always sure it’s worth it.

There are a few things stacked against this pub. There’s not a great selection of beers, the food menu is a little uninspiring and the décor has seen better days. But…it’s a nice place to go for a drink. The bar staff are friendly, there’s plenty going on(I poppped in a couple of nights ago and there was an Irish music jam session going on — fiddles everywhere) and the atmosphere is uniformly friendly. It’s also a very good place to watch rugby, with a big screen and flags of all six nations hanging from the rafters to welcome all the fans. The landlord is a Munster fan I think and there are lots of shirts and pictures hanging from the walls. Give it a try and it might just win you over.

The White Swan has one thing going for it which is that its open late nearly every night(late being past closing time). Its not a bad choice to end up in if your drinking on Mill Road, but if there was another choice(not the Locomotive!) then I would choose to hand out there instead. On a w/e, this place can get a little rough(for Cambridge atleast) and there have been several fights in here during the time I lived around the corner from it. Many years I ate at their BBQ that they had every sunday in the summer on the patio and it was good.
