I was part of a party of ten celebrating a friend’s birthday. To come directly to the point, not one of us was happy with our meals or our service, and not one of us finished what we were served. The menu appears ambitious and leads to high expectations. Execution, however, reveals that there is a general lack of attention in the kitchen and no overall supervision of preparation. It was as if someone wrote the menu without instructing anyone about how to do things. Everyone complained about the level of salt. Asparagus did not have the woody ends trimmed. Eight spears on four plates and all were untrimmed. Although I believe I spied an herb garden out back, many items including the herbed risotto tasted sharply of dried herbs. The ambiance is pleasant enough, but the setting is marred by the rudeness and ineptitude of the staff. Little knowledge of the menu confused several people who with allergies needed detailed information. On two occasions wait staff actually pushed people who stood in their way. With so many other options, why bother with the Three Horseshoes?

The Three Horseshoes is probably my favourite restaurant in the entire world. Set in the refreshringly green hamlet(or village, not really sure on the distinctions) of Madingley, it is a charmingly floral spot for a Summer’s lunch and a cosy retreat from the Winter’s chill. The food is innovative, interesting and always beautifully presented: having spent a lot of time in Italy, I am often dissappointed with the Italian food in England, but The Three Horseshoes always hits the right note. The seasonally changing menu is always a delight, but I particularly like their use of autumn veg, particularly butternut squash. Whatever buffalo mozzarella they use deserves a special place in heaven, and my boyfriend always manages to find room for their delicately seasoned lemon tart. Well worth a visit — if you’re a student, this is definitely one to persuade your parents to take you to.

With a posh white-linen dining room, the Three Horsehoes is a thatched-roof country inn just outside Cambridge. The menu is Italian with several courses of fine food(menu and wine list on their web site). From my visit it looks like it’s the sort of place a family might take their parents for anniversary. They take a lot of pride in the local or quality sourcing of their ingredients(also mentioned on their web site). Certainly the meal my friends and I ate there was very tasty.
