If like me your favorite weekend past-time is eating carbs and going for long walks — you must visit Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar and try their *drum roll* …Potato-On-A-Stick! Sounds simple yet they deserve some sort of medal for this genius, takeaway carb invention! Sadly Caerphilly Mountain didn’t turn out to be as mountainous as we’d hoped so we took the short drive(post Potato Stick) to Merthyr Mawr, climbed the sand dunes and took in the a-mazing views,

Unpretentious, simple menu served from a counter with very pleasant views. Typical greasy spoon type food, but it’s all well cooked and tasty. Can get very busy when the sun is out. Seating is provided, but not enough! Popular & well known local landmark that started as a small hut but is now a very professional operation. Recommended for a filling, cheap snack whilst admiring the views or preparing for a walk along Caerphilly mountain, as long as you don’t expect your food to be served on a plate with a knife & fork!

I was first taken to this little hut on the top of a mountain when my boyfriend and myself were not meant to be holding hands! Although it was a stupid idea of his seen’s as this little hut is probably one of the most established business’s about seeing what I can only imagine as hundreds of customers a day. Why is a shed at the back of beyond so popular you ask? Well, firstly the smell is so divine I thought I’d died and gone to snack heaven. I asked for a cup f tea whilst I pondered on what to consume and even the tea was bloody gorgeous. I settled for a sausage and bacon roll and you know when you get one of those foods that you never want to finish. That’s exactly what all the food up there is like. One word; HEAVENLY! There’s always different staff when I visit the snack bar but each and everyone is so pleasant its like they’ve been cloned from a super happy place. They are happy, this makes me happy, and then they give me food for a nice price and I’m super-duper happy. Apparently this snack bar is the oldest of its kind in Wales too, so by eating here your eating history. Get your jacket on and get up the mountain people!

Those who have been there to experience one first hand know that there is nothing in the world like a steak roll from the Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar. That, my friends, is a scientific fact. I’ve read the lab reports, I’ve seen the numbers and it’s been proven. Founded in 1957, the Snack Bar sits on the top of Caerphilly Mountain near the busy mountain road and sees much passing custom throughout the day, and not without good reason. The amount of searing meat on offer is enough to turn the most hardened vegetarian into a slobbering meat fiend in the time it takes to fry a medium rare steak. From lamb and mint to bacon and pineapple via the legendary breakfast roll in between, this spot is a dieter’s nightmare. If you happen to get caught in the tractor beam, you will get drawn in, you will pull over and you will devour a meaty roll of unparalleled taste and flavour. Prepare yourselves now and be sure to savour that taste while it lasts, it’s the closest you’ll get to heaven without dying first.

This snack bar is legendary in the North Cardiff and Caerphilly area. A lone little shack on the side of the mountain road that is perfect for someone just having regretted braving the unpredictable Welsh weather. They do usual favourites like bacon and fried egg rolls, burgers, teas, coffees and hot chocolates and, if you’re up for a gastronomic challenge, the Mountain Monster Burger. This calorific delight is packed with various layers of fried meat and is served with a look of respect from inside the shack. If the weather is nice enough there are benches dotted around the place so you can enjoy your Monster Burger while looking down the mountain, if that’s your sort of thing. Failing that there is a car park right next to it if your craving for fried meat has coincided with a torrential downpour.

The last time I went to Mountain View was on New Years Day. It was absolutely freezing in fact it was well below zero degrees. My partner and I attempted to go for a walk onto the mountain but within 20 minutes we were back at Mountain View buying a burger and a hot chocolate. Ok its a static burger van but it the location that makes this greasy spoon unique. Even as a child my parents used to take us up Caerphilly Mountain where our reward for a walk over the mountain was a burger and a hot chocolate. These days I don’t need a reward to walk over the mountain to look at the magnificent views, but it helps. This place always seems open — its open 7 days a week and has been so since 1957!
