Set in the back of the Alphabet Gift Shop on Union Street is the Lowercase Coffee Shop, a truly great find. Tempting homemade cakes on the counter, that vary daily like Victoria Sponge, Mint Chocolate cake and Chocolate Orange Sponge, give a good first impression, as do the variety of seating from conventional tables, to comfy chairs and a couple of tables with high bar type chairs. Music pervades but doesn’t intrude every corner of the coffee shop, through the impressive Sonos sound system. There are menu’s for breakfast, lunch and even weekly specials, which on this occasion was a BLT. Having been three times in four days and arriving at around mid-morning every time, we have had the breakfast sandwich with bacon and mushrooms, cooked fresh, and a portion big enough to share, fantastic. We have also sampled their homemade cheese scones; too often cheese scones can be style over substance, not the case here, packed with flavour and warm, perfect. Other dishes on the menu that will definitely be returning to sample are the Fishfinger sandwiches and the scrambled eggs, that come with bacon or salmon. The americano and cappuccino, that accompanied our late breakfasts, were strong and flavoursome too, complimeting the food well. The Lowercase Coffee Shop is our type of place, great food and drink in relaxed surroundings, with staff that are clearly passionate about making this one of the go-to destinations in Burton.
