I find myself never needing to go into WH Smiths apart from to look at the magazines when I have to wait for my train. The days when I would spend hours browsing the pretty coloured folders and Disney themed lined paper are behind me(everything is Mac Book Pro’s these days!) so as horrible as it is to think, I can see WH Smith(along with my wonderful childhood memories) forgoing the same fate as Woolworth’s. However, the WH Smiths located at Temple Meads is always busy therefore it will be a shame should they go out of business. They have a huge selection of newspapers and magazines which is very handy at a place where long waits are guaranteed. They also have a good selection of snacks and lunch deals at not a bad price as far as train station newsagents go. They do the same deals on books(such as buy one, get one half price etc) as the main high street branches which is handy for a last minute ‘thank you for letting me stay’ present. Word of warning… they always, without fail have a huge bar of Galaxy/Dairy Milk on offer for £1 which the sales assistant will wave in front of you as you try to unsuccessfully divert your eyes. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

This small branch of Whsmiths at Temple Meads Station serves as the only reasonably priced(for a train station) shop for snacks and magazines. I’ve dashed in here many a time for a drink or sandwich before boarding a train. They often have a couple of meal deal style offers running, last time I think I benefited from a free paper when buying a bottle of water. If you’ve got a big suitcase though, you won’t stand much of a chance down their narrow aisles. Also, if you’re after something hot or more substantial, wait til you’re past the ticket barrier, where you can find Upper Crust, a restaurant style space, a Party Stand and a Sushi outlet too.

As time goes by WH Smith’s becomes increasingly less needed as a retailer. Whenever I go in to one, I can’t help but think what is the point of this place? What is it that they’re offering to the general public that you can’t find someplace else, cheaper? Their books selection is pretty poor and even in comparison to other leading high street stores like Borders and Waterstones, it is frankly pathetic and incredibly overpriced. When you compare it to Amazon it really is laughable that they even bother to sell books in here anymore. Their stationary selection is dull, uninspiring and again overpriced. If I want stationary I’ll probably go to another specialist store like Staples for example where I know I’ll get more choice and better value for money. Their DVD and Music sections really do take the biscuit though. Limited is a very kind way of describing them. Plus, and here’s the real kicker, they’re unbelievably expensive. They seem to be relying on the meek and uninformed shopper, who still thinks Smiths is a reputable retailer offering the general public the fairest prices for their merchandise, somebody like my Gran in other words. £12.99 for a DVD, you’re having a laugh.

Since leaving school, I rarely find myself needing WHSmiths except for when I’m travelling from Bristol Temple Meads Station. This conveniently placed and well stock stationary shop is a commuter’s lifesaver as it provides a fantastic range of newspapers, magazines and books to keep you entertained on your journey. I’d stay away from their sandwiches though as they’re overpriced and despite appearances, pretty unpleasant.(This can also be said for most of the food they have available here.) I am also very indebted to the staff of this ‘Smiths, as after one horrible five hour journey from Plymouth with a migraine they provided me with paracetemol, water and sympathy. So never fear if you arrive for your train unprepared, you’re bound to find a weird and wonderful mag to hold your attention during your travels.
