Tyntesfield House is one of the markers on the National Trust Map, it’s a stunning Victorian built house and estate overlooking the Yeo Valley(as in where the yogurt comes from!). A ‘Gothic revival extravaganza’ that children and adults alike would find interesting, prepare to be amazed by the collections on show. Currently under huge, and I do mean huge, renovation, if you went a few years ago you may well like to go again now to see the difference. This year five new rooms have been opened to the public. You can even stay overnight on site in picturesque lodges, though I dread to think who much that would set you back!

If Victorian Gothic Revival is your thing(and even if it isn’t) head over to Tyntesfield estate for a nose around the grand old house and sweeping estate. The restoration of this place by the National Trust has been high profile to say the least(20 millions was spent on it) but it’s money well spent. The Victorian gadgets are especially fun — bell-pulls and automatic billiards table included. You can see staff pain-staking restoring stained glass and cleaning stair banisters — fascinating stuff(I’m not being sarcastic!) The walk from the car park is long and arduous one — so warn granny and grandad(or small kids in pushchairs). One thing that got my goat was the timed ticket system, don’t expect to be able to walk straight in late afternoon and get around it all! In terms of greenery and walks — there are acres of part-wooded, part-lawned grounds to mooch around(no dogs!) and I enjoyed imagining I was a Victorian lady swanning around the kitchen garden full of sweet-smelling herbs.
