«This is a local shop for local people! The strangers you would bring would not understand us, our customs, our local ways». It might be a local pub for local people but the Shakey is a wonderful«proper» pub. It hasn’t dollied itself up like some of the other pubs in the area and retains an old-fashioned pub feel. The success of the Shakey is thanks to the fantastic landlord Warwick, a down to earth chap with a love of music. The Shakey has open-mic nights, music quiz nights, dj nights, live music nights and even a poker night! It has a great beer garden and fairy lights strung up around and has a romantic feeling to it on a warm summers eve, possibly due to the ale influenced spectacles I was wearing. A fantastic pub without a bone of pretension in its body. As real pubs go its the«proper job».

Cozy as an old t-shirt, worn jeans and slippers. Good Cornish beers on draught, pool table and quiz nights.

This is a proper locals pub, just across the road from Totterdown Thali café. I came in here on a Sunday afternoon and it was pretty busy, full of locals — not quite to the extent of getting dodgy looks when we walked in, but close to that kind of atmosphere. There’s a good range of standard lagers on draught and a couple of ales, and the menu looked very tempting(but having just eaten a Sunday Roast we couldn’t bring ourselves to sampling it). It’s not the largest of pubs so when it gets busy you’ll be hard pushed to find a seat. We opted for the benches on the front garden, which would be very nice had it not been a freezing day. I wasn’t impressed either way with this pub — a good local, but nothing to write home about.

Since I moved to Totterdown, a lot of pubs and bars in the area have been renovated, but still none of them are good enough to match the original and best. The Shakey is very much a local pub with a friendly, lively atmosphere. This is mainly due to their love of music, as local DJs play an eclectic(and loud!) mix of alternative sounds on weekends(there’s a legendary music quiz on Wednesdays too). If this all gets too much, you can always retire to the garden and there’s seating out the front too, which is handy as this pub always seems to be busy. A little rough around the edges maybe, but us faithful locals wouldn’t have it any other way.

If, like me, you love your music loud and your ales real, this pub is a perfect little hideaway. Warm up in the heated garden, flex your game muscles at the pool table and generally unwind. I visited on a poetry night — with a full-on poetry slam performed by luminaries of the MA in performance poetry at Bath Spa, plus author Lucy English. Such a treat, I laughed all the way home. There’s plenty of dark corners to nestle away in and the bar’s stocked with beers with fascinating monikers like Cornish Coaster and Old Speckled Hen.
