Brilliant little pub with a low ceiling and excellent food. Huge portions, freshly made. I would recommend all the food. We had 6 diners and I sampled several dishes and they were all excellent.

Good reliable pub food, but can’t book in advance. Probably the best in the area, and good value

As far as out-of-town traditional boozers go, The Rose & Crown is a good starting point. They’ve got the usual on taps — Foster/Kronie/Blackthorn basics and fairly priced. The Sunday roast I munched down was good — the plate bigger than my head, the beef nicely rare and thinly sliced, the potatoes crispy(though the Yorkshire pudding I suspect may have been, sin of sins, Aunt Bessie’s) and plenty of gravy to cover it all. The apple crumble and custard was warmingly lush, but not as good as my mum makes(obviously). Add a patio area, a roaring log fire in winter and ‘oo-arr’ sort of locals and it’s like you’ve stepped into a Hardy novel(not Jude, though, that would be very wrong).
