Bourgeoisie is a word that springs to mind when recalling The Grant Bradley Gallery. Located incongruously close to Asda Bedminster, the venue nonetheless attracts a healthy number of visitors, many of whom will also be found in the nearby library with their offspring. If you enjoy the arts, and want to support your local art community, this is the place for you. Often displaying work by Bristol based artists, in addition to hosting other creative events such as creative writing courses and poetry readings, The Grant Bradley Gallery has its finger in many an arty pie. It also functions as a coffee house, serving a variety of cakes and beverages. I feel obliged to add, perhaps uncharitably, that I have yet to see anything artistically provocative here. If ‘nice’ art is not for you, I’d suggest you stay well away from this place.

For all you Art types out thier this is a great place to visit in Bristol. As well as showing many different exhibitions there are also events that are held in the evening. One night before Christmas a few friends and I went along and they had a fantastic night of live poetry, presentation of work and a live acoustic music set to finish it off(There was also a raffle! and you can’t beat a good raffle!). The whole night was brilliant, and the works of art on display were beautiful. I would highly recommend popping along during the week or on Saturday and enquiring as to what is currently on and what is planned for the future, they are all very friendly and welcome a nice little conversation. Check it out!

This gallery is just a brisk walk from Temple Meads and worth the trip. A gallery with an eye for selling items for gifts so all art is approachable. Often with a slant toward art for children or their rooms which is not surprising considering the number of mums in here mid-morning for a cup of tea. Last xmas they had an amazing display of kinetic cardboard sculpture kits. Don’t let that put you off — they have art for us grown ups as well! They had a very interesting exhibition on from artists with learning disabilities when I last visited. They have a new area at the back which has a selection of second hand books — profits from the books go straight to charity.

Originally Bedminster Library, the Grant Bradley Gallery has been supplying wall space to both national and international artists since its inception in 2005. This is the perfect antidote to the bruisings and spinnings of my weekly shop in the Bedminister Asda next door. Last time I sought solace in the Bradley was after a particularly taxing time involving a self-checkout — the stunning collection of textiles from an artists’ collective put pay to any feelings of shop-rage. The underlying ethos is for approachability, so you wont get any of those arty affectations. The Bradley is totally welcoming, and is just as much a place to sip lattes and get your nose into a good book — they have a mezzanine floor with huggy sofas, a selection of secondhand books to peruse, high whitewalls that induce calm and there’s always some top-draw art to goggle. There are life drawing classes, talks from artists and arts’ events for budding Damian Hirsts during the scholl holidays. Also, the giftshop is a good place to seek out that individual gift — my girlfriend had to practically be manhandled out the door after discovering a must-have range of handmade handbags for under £10.

Grant Bradley Gallery is situated between Asda and Bedminster library. It’s a great space for exhibiting art and the high ceiling gives it a really airy feel. They host a wide range of art work from sculpture and jewellery to photographs and paintings. It’s a great little gallery to visit and have a look round, especially if you are in the area, or even to use it as a chance to meet a friend as they also have a little café area, serving reasonably priced drinks and snacks. The pieces themselves are affordable if you want to purchase a piece for your home, or there are smaller pieces you could get as a unique gift for someone else. If your interested in making art they also run some classes so its worth having a look at their website to find out more.
