Bristol has a number of good Caribbean restaurant to chose from, but Rice and Things is my favourite! From the outside Rice and Things doesn’t look like much. It doesn’t look like much inside either. But the food here is incredible! I have eaten A LOT of jerk chicken from a lot of different places; I love the stuff! And this is by far the best I’ve had. Rice & Things have a big menu which isn’t cheap, but it really is quality. They break the menu down into Fish, Lobster, Chicken, Beef, Pork and Vegetarian dishes which is nice and easy to navigate. They do a Belfield Stew Beef which is unbelievably good. It isn’t something I would normally order but I tried some of a friends last time and I can’t wait to order it next time I go. Did I mention that they do the best Jerk Chicken? The crispy King Prawns are also a great starter. Service wise I can’t fault them. I’ve had more takeaways than I have used the restaurant, but I’ve always had good service when I’ve eaten in. Rice & Things was on a Jamie Oliver programme a couple of years back and the cue out of the door for the next couple of weeks was insane. But It just shows how good they are!

The food was like eating in Mandeville, real Jamaican food, served like were on the Island The standard menu is fairly brief but comprehensive, the brown stew fish was a good looking fish, the chicken was authentically flavoured, the jerk was as hot as you like … even the veggie chunks were like I last had at Bluefields, JA The a la carte menu is only available when the chef can fit it in, call ahead and they’ll arrange it for you The staff were very friendly and made you feel welcome There was a constant stream of Jamaicans calling for their meals The prices are good, as is the quality, £15 for a full meal is pretty reasonable to me We loved the place and have already been back once with another planned

Rice and Things is great for a non-typical takeaway when pizza, chinese or the chippie won’t do. This Jamaican restaurant offers traditional West Indian cooking for both sit-in and take out. Recently it’s been quite usual for me to skip along for some chicken, rice and pea instead for cooking for myself. Three reasons: the food is more interesting than I could realistically cook quickly for myself, it’s pretty cheap and when I’ve finished stuffing my face I sit back, rub my belly and feel genuinley healthier than I would with any other takeaway food. I was chuffed to get home and see an overflowing box of fried chicken, loads of rice, with extra salad and gravy that I hadn’t even asked for. Bonus! But where was my plantain?! I asked for plantain! It seems that my extra gravy and salad was a substitute for my favourite sweet treat, which is a nice gesture, however it would have been better to tell me that such a swap was taking place! Oh well, this all came in at £6.50 which ain’t bad although I’m sure the mutton, goat and curry dishes would come in at a heftier price. Although I haven’t eaten in the restaurant, it’s always busy, in fact, absolutely heaving at weekends so it’s safer to book head. There’s also all-you-can eat events held monthly if you really can’t get enough of the place.

If you are a bit bored of the standard takeaway options of Chinese, Indian and pizza, then you could give this Jamaican place a go. Rice & Things is both a restaurant and Takeaway service, although it’s pretty small so if you did want to eat in maybe book ahead! Although I think a Jamaican takeaway is a great idea, personally I wouldn’t go back to this one just for the fact that I think they’re pretty over priced. For a meat dish you can expect to pay around £12, and that’s without rice or extras, and even vegetarian is a tenner — so it’s around double the price of Indian and Chinese. As for the food it was pretty average and nothing special, so I didn’t feel I got great value for money. I wouldn’t say I’m a massive Caribbean food fan though, so if you are it might be worth trying out!

Rice & Things is a relatively new(and orignial, horaaay!) restuarant to pop up mid-way on Cheltenham Road. Most people who talk about this cannot help but put on a strong Jamacian accent as they pronounce the name of the restaurant, which in turn has become quite a sucessful advertisement technique! I particulally like the fact that its so bright and cheery on both the outside and inside. It’s almost always busy in here, which is an encouraging thought on it’s own. The food is typcial, traditional and wholesome Jamacian food. Their Jerk Chicken is devine but if you are looking for something a bit more authentic then check out their curry mutton with rice and peas. It’s definitely worth a taste.
