Wow! What a beautiful selection of vintage clothing. This shop is incredibly cool and full of retro & classic clobber. Shops this good are usually reserved for Camden. They were even playing some beautiful soul records when I went in this afternoon. Although the staff didn’t seem particularly interested in me being in their shop, but sometimes I like this; it’s nice to be left to your own devises without a pestering shop assistant(although I am sure this isn’t why they didn’t approach me). The hats! What a range of cool hats! Fedoras to cowboy hats, they must be mine! They also had some stunning leather jackets(think Brad Pitts wardrobe In Benjamin Button… only with no Brad Pitt wearing them, sorry). They also sold trinkets and oddities from decades gone by, things like tea sets. They seemed to claim that they specialised in ball outfits but really I think they’re the perfect shop for anyone in need of that perfect fancy dress costume or people who just love funky retro & unique outfits. This shop is a real find!

This small second-hand shop sells mainly clothes and is positioned in a slightly out-of-the-way spot in Hotwells, which most people probably drive past rather than walk past(by the Jacob Wells roundabout, down by the water almost opposite the SS Great Britain). This, coupled with the fact that it’s only open a few days a week, makes you wonder how it survives. On the other hand, its name is more apt now than when the shop first opened, and I’m sure it has been hoping to be one of the few businesses that can cash in on the recession rather than lose out. If you like your clothes to have a worn or vintage look, it’s worth a browse around — there are jackets, jeans, t-shirts and accessories, plus a few other bits and bobs besides clothes. Not really my cup of tea — but I can see the appeal for those who enjoy a rummage through vintage gear they’re unlikely to spot anyone else wearing.

Recession by name, recession by nature? Well sort of. As Will said it opened before the global economy came to a stand still and the R word was the most spoken abouit word as well as the Credit Crunch, and has probably since attracted a few people who might see it as the shop to go to in the current climate. It is however more of a brick-a-brack store with many vintage clothes and furniture(ish) type items. some of the shelves stock surprising items, and you will have an interesting time browsing around, but it’s not really my cup of tea, recession or no recession I don’t think it will be a popular hot spot.

I’ll be honest, the only reason I found this shop was because I was a passenger in a car waiting at the roundabout next to it. I looked out and saw a mannequin stood outside the front door displaying some of the clothes. There’s nothing strange about that, you might say, and you’d be right. Except for the fact that the mannequin outside of this particular shop is green, and shaped like a genetically engineered celery-stick woman. Now, I, for one, find that to be pretty weird. I don’t know why it’s like that — presumably so that random passers by such as myself notice the place, in which case it definitely works. My curiosity was piqued and the next day, I made the journey down on foot to go and see what the shop itself had in store for me. There are plenty of rails of some excellent quality second hand clothes and at very reasonable prices as well. I came away happy with a new(old) pair of jeans and a t-shirt — all thanks to a celery stick. Now there’s something you don’t hear every day.

Recession opened fairly recently, just before the word recession started turning up in every other news broadcast. They seem to be surviving the credit crunch though and doing it whilst only opening three days a week. Pretty impressive given the lack of any real passing trade and their reasonable prices. This small vintage clothes takes a little bit of finding. It’s on the Jacobs Wells roundabout, and only five minutes from College Green. They’ve got the usual mix of detritus and gems you get in a vintage shop. Some nicely weathered jeans when I went along and I picked up a cheap jacket. The size means that you’re not gaurranteed to get what you want. Their’s enough odd bits and pieces to make the shop an interesting visit though. Though it’s reasonably trendy, they don’t take themselves too seriously. Hidden away, Recession makes the journey out of the city centre well worth it if you’re into vintage fashion.

There’s a small section of shops out here in Hotwells that make this worth the walk out from town(you can lock your bike on the railings on the harbourside) but watch out for the restricted opening times. Most are closed on Mondays round here and this little gem is only open Thursday to Saturday. Initially looking like a jumble sale and a charity shop, you will soon figure out that this shop has impeccable style with a sense of fun. Lots of vintage clothes, which they know well enough to theme appropriately(nice 80s set up in the window at the moment) plus accessories, badges and nick-nacks. You will need time to have a good browse — great for yourself or gifts for friends.
