Gift shops are always going to stock some stuff you love, and other stuff you loathe, particularly when they’re trying to cater for everyone. This one’s just the same. Outside, near the doorway, you can browse several stands of postcards, with more greeting cards inside. The gifts range from ornaments, bath stuff and jewellery, to drinks coaster sets, trendy kitchen accessories, and children’s toys and teddy bears. It feels like the kind of place you reach when you’re getting desperate looking for a present for someone you don’t know too well. It’s a bit unremarkable and a little overpriced — fine for cards and lovely wrapping paper, but not for much else.

There’s nothing this shop is doing badly, or exceptionally. It’s just a gift shop, and has everything you need from a gift shop: a good, large card selection and the standard gift shop fare which always includes jewellery, coasters, trinkets, pencils, bath and body stuff, and cuddly toys. It’s not an original shop, but why should it be? It’s doing its job fine, and raking in a lot of money, presumably mostly from the wealthier students walking down from the Stoke Bishop university halls. It’s expensive, to be sure, but the stock is high quality, and it’s in Clifton, so it’s hardly surprising that they’re catering to wealthier shoppers. Some work needs to be done on the shop front, though, as it looks a bit dull and uninviting and doesn’t grab your attention as you walk by.

I have often been tempted by the window displays and selection of cards on display outside One Hundred on Whiteladies Road but only ventured in yesterday. They have lots of things to offer in the way of gift ideas and cards as well as some very interesting more novelty items. Including a beautiful rocking horse! However despite the large variety of gifts that they offer I actually found nothing particularly remarkable about this shop, especially as there are several near by with similar offerings. The biggest criticism I have is the prices at One Hundred, they are much more expensive than other stores. And the atmosphere in the store was not ideal, the man behind the counter was not helpful and seemed to resent me being there! One Hundred is definitely worth a look, especially for more bespoke gifts, but be prepared to pay a little bit more for them!

As those who have read a few of my reviews will note I am rather against the consumer culture that we live in. I prefer locally sourced food, for instance, or shops that provide human operated services like shoe fixing. Places like this shop really don’t get my juices flowing, so to speak. Yes it may be a shiny and clean shop full of glitzy sparkling items, and probably an independent store — so worthy of four or five stars you may think. Not for me however. This is a collection of potential gifts for someone you have never met before and have no idea what they like. Every gift carries the image that a wad of cash was traded for this bit of steel, glass or marble that hasn’t got any real love in it. Another of my pet hates can be found here in the form of Banksy-esque street art embossed on coasters and place mats. People say there’s not a class divide in Bristol but someone’s driving around Stokes Croft and St Pauls, snapping some local art, printing it onto a coaster(poo pooing any political agenda) and shifting it for a fiver up in high society. Pull the other one.

I’m embarrassed to say that it came as a genuine surprise to me that this shop is at 100 Whiteladies Road is NOT a coincidence. I thought it was name One Hundred is because there’s hundreds of reasons you should visit… This sweet little gift shop isn’t anything out of the ordinary or exciting, but it is extremely reliable when you’re looking for a descent birthday card or pretty wrapping paper. There’s also a range of quirky stocking fillers if you’re in desperate need of that last minute gift.

There’s got to be a shop like one hundred gifts on every shopping street; on Gloucester Road it’s Iota, on Park Street, the Guild or BS8’s gift section. It stocks the usual selection of novelty household items, plus a good range of funny and cute cards and wicked wrapping paper. Don’t forget the Clifton price tag when you’re budgeting for gifts though or you’ll be seriously in debt.

100 is a gift shop on Whiteladies Road/Blackboy Hill(I don’t actually know where one ends and the other starts). It’s got a large amount of unique gifts and a good selection of good quality cards. Be mindful that this area classes as Clifton so the prices adhere appropriately. There’s a few quirky kitchen accessories, random household accessories directed at females(see the flowery tape measures and hammers), as well as jewellery, pens, and gadgets. I haven’t been particularly impressed with the service– it’s always been a bit gruff and, to be honest, unpleasantly Cliftonian for my liking. However, there’s a good chance of finding something special in here, so it redeems the lost star for service.

Little gift and card shop on Whiteladies Road, has a nice selection of greetings cards including Spike Milligan cards, plus a range of little toys and gifts. They stock Jellycat and a very groovy range of hand puppets. Although there are some gifts for adults their strong point is for the kids.
