What is this nonsense about a Mack Daddy’s being expensive. You certainly can get a £30 chop job in a number of places around town or pay a good deal more than Mack Daddy’s prices and wonder just why you paid so much money… and as for cutting your own hair, well, no comment. It’s a professional salon with real, talented professionals working on your head. Greg at the Colston shop is great!

Phwoar! Their website sure does give me a headache. The actual shop here on Colston Street though, thankfully, doesn’t. I really like hairdressers’ that have some personal style, and don’t just blend in to all the others out there with the same type of interior salon-y decoration. I personally would never come in here, just because I usually snip my own hair, and paying £38 for a haircut seems bonkers to me. However I met someone who told me that she got her hair cut here on a model night, where they get a junior to cut your hair, for £5! I pretty much immediately went to make an appointment, and promptly got one booked in. I have to say, the staff are so incredibly friendly — you almost expect them to be ‘too cool for school’ to bother with politeness(especially since I was asking for the £5 haircut), but they’re very nice. Came here for the appointment, got my hair cut by someone who has in fact been cutting hair for years and years on men, and now is training to cut for women. He was great; really listened to what I wanted and didn’t at all show any annoyance when I decided to make changes to what I wanted when he was almost done. The great surprise however, was when the haircut was done, and I was going to pay, and he came over and whispered to me ‘Model haircuts are free, no charge!’, to which I beamed a happy ‘Thanks!!’ and skipped out the door. So if you’re thinking of a haircut, you’re certainly in great hands with the peeps that work here! I guess £38 is quite worth it, if you know you’re going to get a good cut.

It’s not hard to spot Mack Daddy’s walking down Colston street, with the large glass windowpanes giving way tos young and hip stylists putting the finishing touches to the latest geometric haircuts. For the follical artistry that takes place, the prices are elevated without being excessive. If at first glance it looks out of your price range, don’t forget to ask about current deals and student cuts. Mack Daddy’s is one of those hairdressers where you actually feel you’re getting your money’s worth — something different but flattering(or not, if you so choose) rather than the usual trim and layers please. The staff are as edgy as the graffitied interior as well. Hairdressers may be famed for their inane chat, but I remember a 17 year old trainee and enthused newcomer to Bristol’s rave scene explaining why he had packed his clippers and moved South West: «there’s not as much crime ‘cos everyone’s too mashed to care!»

Mack Daddy’s is a unisex hairdressers located near the Christmas Steps and the centre of Bristol. Although it is actually a chain of hairdressers, it does have the air of an independent business. The exterior is very cool and funky and really appeals to the younger generation! In addition, the interior is also cool, clean and young, is as the service from the employees. They are friendly and professional, but don’t bombard you with holiday plans and current weather comments which I appreciate! Price wise I would say that Mack Daddy’s is a little expensive. The majority of local hairdressers has a restyle and wash for roughly £30 but Mack Daddy’s is £45. In all, a very professional service but maybe tad on the expensive side.

I accompanied my friend to the hairdressers, and we wondered down to Colston Street, to one of the 3 Mack Daddy’s in Bristol. As with many independant Bristol chains, there was a bit of a cool vibe going on within, with graffiti on the walls and trendy staff. My friend has long hair, and is always skeptical about trying a new hairdressers down to the fact that they always end up taking too much off. The lady(who I swear was her doppelgänger but with short hair) listened to what she wanted, and without too much embarrassing hairdresser chat, got on with it. It was not cripplingly expensive, although next to any barber you feel a little ripped off, and they do offer discounts. Being so close to the BRI, this branch offered an NHS workers discount at 20% off.
