Out the back of the Downend Folk House is a small area of long, thin green that stretches back to the Frome river. It has a small fenced off children’s play area, which is pretty much always empty when I come here, and then a sloped piece of green which is great for tiring a dog with a game of ball running up and down hill, and then a woodland and riverside walk which comes to an abrupt end when it reaches a private house and garden at the end. However you can nip across the stream and follow the river up to Frenchay and the entrance to Vassell’s Park — be warned that this is a rough and ready path which in some places has fallen away down the slope so be careful you don’t do the same. Often I am scrambling across(don’t do this when it has been raining) and my dog just leaps over carrying a large stick — damn him and his four legged nimbleness! The field is nice and quiet, you will see a few dogs here at the 9am-10am popular dog walk time slot. The woods are quieter as it is a rough path — the riverside walk is popular with fishermen in the summer. In the autumn and winter the decking gets a bit too slippery for anyone. When Vassell’s is just too dog– or children-heavy then I like to come here and have the space to play with my dog. Most people respect that this is a place to give other dogs distance and their owners some peace and quiet, so if you do come here please don’t ruin that!
