Strategically placed at the top of Union Street, this Italian restaurant is a popular choice for weekend revellers looking for somewhere to line their stomachs before the drinking begins. Offering a reasonably priced, relatively diverse menu and a small but cosy restaurant space, La Grotta strikes a good balance between low key and occasional. My last visit here was a mostly positive experience. The seafood pizza was sensational and the house red was surprisingly tasty. However, the waiters had that irritating habit of trying to rush you in order that they could make more money more quickly. We were dining on a Saturday night, so perhaps if you visit La Grotta during the week, you may witness more laid back waiters. If not, be sure to stand your ground with them — they are Italians after all and appreciate a bit of fire!

From the outside and to those who have maybe never been to Italy, La Grotta looks a bit small and a little bit dingy. However I was attracted to the uniqueness and individuality that Zizzi’s and Pizza Express lacks. Inside, the character retains itself and I really felt as if I had been transported from central Bristol to the Tuscan hills of rustic Italy! The food was really very good. It had a much nicer flavour than your chain restaurants and the staff were so lovely and friendly. The place is family owned and there is a huge emphasis on making you feel welcome. Most definitely the best Italian in central Bristol.

I went here for dinner with a friend after a work colleague recommended it to me. When we were in the classic quandary of what to do about dinner, I piped up with this as a suggestion. Sorted. Here’s the problem — if you ever take somebody to somewhere new, after having told them that it has been recommended to you by somebody else, they are almost certainly going to have high expectations — unfeasibly high in this case, as it turns out. Now, let’s get this straight, it’s really not too bad, but it’s just not too good either. I had a veggie pizza here, which was fine, but, to be honest, I would have rather had a Pizza Express or Zizzi’s. Still, the service is impeccable — it’s a family run business and all of the staff are super friendly. Just because of that I want to give this place four stars, but I really can’t.
