First impressions can be deceptive, I know. But The Jolly Colliers was brought to my attention one summer afternoon as I happened to be wandering passed it in a state of(soon-to-be-interrupted) mellow reflection. Nearing the joint, I became aware of some commotion unravelling outside so promptly crossed over the road. Seconds later, the miniature crowd which had gathered outside the pub gave way to a group of writhing women, pissed as farts, attempting to do eachother in. Locals and passers by(myself included) watched curiously as the fight continued, and was eventually broken up by police. Judging by the surprised expressions on many a local’s face, I’d say this type of occurence was a rarity. However, I’ve never felt compelled to visit the place since…

With beer at around £2.70 a pint it’s a bit cheaper than aalot of places in Bedminster(by about 20p!) This is essentially a locals pub, and profits from the regular steady custom rather than any heavy party nights. A TV that occationally shows sport it’s a good place to visit if you fancy a quick half. If you come in mid-day you ca quickly lose all sense of time and upon exiting you have to adjust to the light levels a bit! But that is an expierience that should come hand in hand with all pub visits in my opinion!

Another of West Street’s jolly pubs which has that kind of interior which instantly fills you up with warmth, making you comfortable and ready for a good old drink. The atmosphere inside the Jolly Collier is friendly and the landlord greets you very kindly. Drinks are reasonably priced and on the weekend’s you are treated to Debbie’s Disco Karaōke on a Saturday which gets everyone in to the party mood. If your daring enough you can get up and belt out your own rendition of Tina’s ‘Simply The Best’, Robbie’s ‘Angels’ or Right Said Fred’s ‘I’m Too Sexy’! But be warned of the man who gets up to do Tom Jones’ ‘Leave Your Hat On’ — you can usually spot the prime candidate sat in the corner with his Trilby on his head and a knowing smile across his face.
