Imax Theatre Bristol

Channel 4 seem to have gone nuts for 3D recently. Probably off the back of a handful of big Hollywood films having another stab at this well trodden gimmick. The I Max theatre on Anchor road has been around for quite some time offering 3D films on the biggest cinema screen I have ever seen.
I say «films», but the ones that have been screened here in the past have been nothing more than 10 or 20 minute shorts that are almost exclusively made to display how wonderful 3D cinema is. Maybe it is, but after 2 or 3 minutes the novelty has warn off and I want a proper story or something interesting to be happening actually in the film.
They screened Superman 3 here a few years ago. I didn’t go (don’t like the films), but if the ratio of the projector was set to fill the entire screen I could imagine it would be quite an experience. This is something they should do more often and perhaps they will now with some of these new Hollywood 3D films. It’s expensive though.

The IMAX cinema has been closed for sometime now (since April 2007) when @ Bristol had a bit of financial trouble — with the Wildwalk closing as well only Explore managed to survive. Now (November 2009) they are opening the aquarium and the IMAX will be part of the ticket price to view ocean-​themed films.
I went to see one of the last films they showed here — Batman Begins — and it was totally immersing. The sound of the batmobile careering round the streets of Gotham was unforgettable. However, having movies that in your face every time? A bit much, for the blockbusters only and at the high costs that @ Bristol seem to employ to their services then it was no surprise that this IMAX — and many others around the country– have fallen to disuse.

Fantastic i was amazed by the 3D films, really good cinema. The tickets are expensive, the films are fantastically immersive on the screen, worth the money but could not afford to go as often as a normal cinema.

Don’t listen to the other ill informed views on the IMAX theatre in Bristol. Why? Well it closed over a year ago!
Most of the comments above are true of IMAX cinemas. Tickets are expensive, the films are fantastically immersive on the massive screen, and the choice of films is fairly limited, but it is well worth doing, perhaps on an annual basis.
And this is the main problem, it’s not the films that are the draw, but the big screen, and once you’ve experienced it, well you’ve done it. So getting people to come back when there’s not a blockbuster movie to pull them in, and there’s a higher price is always going to be a problem. So the place went under.
However, the At Bristol development is well worth a visit, especially the science museum attraction.

The Imax Theatre is a massive cinema near At Bristol. I went here a few years ago and I am not sure if its still open.
When I went the Theatre was newly open and I had a half price offer, the entrance fee is normally a little high but its got more to offer than the average cinema.
I saw a film about Egypt at the Imax when it was quite new and was impressed by the way that the filming and the big screens made you feel as though you could be there.
They also show 3d films at the Imax and I have always meant to watch one but I haven’t had the chance.

This is amaing and well worth a visit. I first thought it was just your average cinema, I was soo wrong! It was amazing and I wouldn’t hesitate to pay the high entrance fee again to see the 3D magic that goes on!
I saw a film entitled into the abyss, it was all underwater and it was magical!
This is very central in Bristol and is a very popular attraction despite it’s high price. Tickets to the Imax would make a great Christmas present.
