It can be really difficult to know where to start when it comes to renting a car. More often than not, the firms with ‘easy’ and ‘budget’ in their names are the way to go if you want to save a few pennies. But get the timing right and even the more established, mainstream names like Hertz are worth a punt. This time, I managed to get a car for four days for less than £70. It was the smallest category but it was a 1.4 Fiesta — enough to get me to Newcastle within five hours and on less than ¾ of a tank of diesel. The hire place can be a bit of a pain to get to — it’s a 10 – 15 minute walk from Bristol Temple Meads but it is worth it. The staff are very friendly and upfront. They won’t charge you a £500 excess for a tiny scuff like some places would and they aren’t pushy when it comes to selling extra insurance cover etc. I’ve hired small cars from about four or five different companies in Bristol now and this was definitely the best.
