A brilliant family greengrocer(‘?)s with an unbelievable selection of fresh fruit and veg, all looking good enough to… eat. If you get sick of how mangey supermarket fruit & veg can be you should make a trip to this shop. The colours of all the stock alone are so beautiful against the backdrop of Gloucester Road, like a rainbow of healthy living; they have everything from mushrooms to chillies all at a very reasonable price. Really these are market stall prices and the only thing missing is somebody shouting ‘two for a pound’, followed by ‘morning guv’nor. The freshness of the tomatoes and grapes out the front on display was second to none and does put larger supermarket chains to shame. This has to be one of the best Greengrocers in Bristol; I just wish it was closer to my house.

Having recently discovered Gardener’s Patch I can safely say that I will never go back to Somerfield’s bog standard fruit and veg. All of Gardener’s Patch’s produce is locally grown and you can tell that it is leagues above the supermarket’s versions. Prices are also much more reasonable and you are able to get a lot more for your money than usual. Keep an eye out for the evening when things are dramatically reduced and you can really pick up a good bargain!

Many people exhort others to support their local businesses. This can be a bit suspect at times, whilst I don’t want the whole world to turn into a Tescos if a business is no good it shouldn’t get saved by virtue of the postcode of its owners. Gardener’s Patch, however, is an excellent grocers and deserves all the support it can get. For a green grocers it’s pretty big. This means more than your usual variety of apples and various things I hadn’t seen before(who knew guavas were so tasty?). The people are all lovely locals who bring a bit character to your shop(with that said the staff at the Somerfield down the road have all got thick Bristolian accents). They also get the queues down nice and quick so you shouldn’t be waiting aroudn for too long. It’s cheap, not rock bottom, but pretty good all the same. Most important of all, the produce is fresh. They don’t get hung up on having the prettiest fruit and veg as well, which I always find annoying — a wonky carrot tastes just as good as a straight one. Gardener’s Patch is great little grocers, one of Bristol’s best independents.
