There’s something about Cotham Hill Bakery that lifts my soul whenever I walk through its doors. It could be the smiling faces on the friendly staff, the smell of rising dough or their selection of pies and pastries. The prices reflect the fact that the produce is made freshly, and that the ingredients are organic. But, that means that their shelf life is pretty non-existent so if you’re buying anything from here, make sure you eat it within a day or two of buying. I can’t say that I shop here regularly, but it makes a lovely change from the supermarkets.

A little expensive and out of my price range for a regular loaf of bread, but if I am passing by I cannot stop myself popping in for a cheeky iced bun. Everything is freshly made as you would expect, but that does mean that the goods tend to go stale fairly quickly. Something baring in mind if you are thinking of buying a loaf of bread for one. Very friendly and efficient staff too.

This bakery is small but powerful, in my opinion. With an excellent selection of lunch items, I’ve been here on a number of occasions to cure my hunger at lunch time. They do all the standard sandwiches(but particularly well, with just the right amount of butter and filling), and a variety of pasties, pies, turnovers and general baked goods. Their chicken pasty is excellent — get it warm and you won’t be disappointed. There’s also an excellent selection of bread loaves, from baguettes to organic granary. I advise a baguette — really soft and tasty bread. It’s got a real neighbourhood spirit to it, which is proven in the friendly service of the staff.

Mmmm, this place gets an extra star for having the best Chelsea buns I’ve ever tasted. Big and covered in icing, and always fresh, absolutely perfect. They do other things too, perhaps not quite as perfect at these. The sausage rolls are excellent though — perfect mid-morning hunger patch fillers. I don’t really need to go into to much detail. That they often have a queue out the door speaks for itself. It’s particularly popular with office workers, who will descend upon the place from about half past 12 onwards and clear the racks of all the best stuff. Make sure to get there before then. The actual bread is very good too(and organic, obviously), although I usually go for the cheaper stuff at the Supermarket out of budget concerns. Yummy stuff is what they do best here and if you’ve got a sweet tooth like mine you’ll be hooked after one visit.
