I can soundly say that whatever you will be dressing up as can be supplied by this shop. I’m going to a Halloween party as Dorothy from the wizard of Oz(i even found ruby slipper stilettos-yeah!!!) and i’m renting the identical dress including basket and soft toy dog(i’m a shoe in for the top Halloween costume prize i reckon, score) it’s not to expensive about £20 to rent the outfit for the night. You can rent for 2,3 or 4 days from memory. i’m also going to another party as a zombie playboy bunny… i know, i know… my ideas were a bit pants– it’s hard trying to be original and funny! The shop has everything i needed at really reasonable prices. They even have a sale 10% off right now for a few more days… win! The staff are really nice and had a good giggle with them about my outfit choices and they helped me put together some parts of it, making helpful suggestions about what type of bullet holes and scabs to go for(not a convo you have every day) When i do Halloween, i go all out. Most Fun time of year! This is my go to fancy dress shop, if they don’t have it then i doubt anywhere will. Located mid way on cols-ton ave there is pay and display parking across the street. They have changing rooms to try some outfits on and a HUGE range of rental outfits that are all dry cleaned when people return them(otherwise gross) Going strong after many years i hope it will for many more :)

Perhaps I encountered the staff on an off day, make that days, but whenever I’ve frequented this costume shop the atmosphere has been flat and the staff have been quite abrasive. There is no doubt that this is one of the best fancy dress shops in town, with a huge selection of hire outfits and accessories to buy. But while I was in there looking for an 80s outfit(not my party I would like to add!) I felt that I was being watched the whole time. The staff were cranky when I wanted to try on a wig and just didn’t seem interested. If you’re a student then this place is the equivalent of those newsagents that have a handwritten sign in the door: no more than 2 school children at any one time allowed inside!

Wow what a find! So many fancy dress shops these days can’t afford to keep going without diversifying and end up just selling sleazy tat for hen and stag dos. You can’t blame them, it’s just their attempt to keep afloat. But this shop is large enough and obviously well-patronised enough to keep true to its origins and after more than 50 years as a family business they are obviously alert to their customers’ needs. There’s always such a fantastic window display with beautiful masks scattered about to a whole array of wigs and saucy maids, caped crusaders and skeletons. And they have such a huge range of costumes inside and are so experienced they can always suggest ingenious suggestions to some of the weirder outfits or themes. There’s everything from the period to the wacky modern– pirates to sluts, Alice in Wonderland to the Devil. Well worth a visit.

The Christmas Steps Costume Hire and Joke Shop is a wonderful shop hidden away just a short walk from the city centre. It does look a little tacky from the outside and I think that a bit more effort in the shop window could really help draw more customers in. Inside, they have pretty much anything you could ask for. Their website isn’t great and doesn’t do the business any justice so if you are looking for a costume definitely pop in for a visit. Their catalogue is extensive and I’m sure you’ll find something to wear! The staff are also really lovely. They were really helpful and informative, and they never seemed to complain no matter how many costumes I wanted to try on!

Even though I’m three years out of university, I can happily say that fancy dress parties are still a regular part of my social repertoire. So when the 9th September 2009 rolled around I knew the only way to celebrate was to throw an impromptu emergency 999 party. And I knew the only place to get supplies was Christmas Steps Costume and Hire Shop. It may look slightly tacky from the outside, but inside is an Aladdin’s cave of old-school costume and delights to be had. The helpful staff, who are surprisingly chipper considering they must have seen it all before, are at hand to aide you in finding the outfit of your dreams. There’s also party favours, accessories and make up on sale to transform you into whatever mythical creature or famous face you want to become. The prices are reasonable in comparison to their lesser competitions. But remember — they’re not open on a Monday. A steep walk up the Christmas Steps and a frantic costume finding mission taught me that the hard way!

This is a proper old school costume and joke shop. Not only has it been here for as long as I can remember, the people here take a real pride in this slightly old fashioned profession without resorting to gimmicky rubbish. And with Halloween coming up, it’s well worth a visit; with the help of the staff here I’ve managed to pull together everything from a Spinal Tap outfit to an uncanny likeness for Tina Turner(I was going to a festival), as well as buying presents for my bizarrely pirate obsessed niece. As Matthew Kelly would say: what a transformation!

With Halloween coming up I thought I should give this place a review. This place is more or less guaranteed to have what you want costumewise. They have… chicken costumes, scooby costumes, historical costumes, cat costumes, etc. I’m sure you get the idea. So if you’ve got an engagement that requires dressing up and looking like a fool, they should be able to help. That the staff are nice and friendly helps a lot too. The joke shop side of things is pretty comprehensive too — not just woopy cushions. Prices are generally reasonable. Worth noting that they don’t open on Mondays if, like me, you always leave these things until the very last minute.

Unbelievably considering its size, this shop is hidden away and it took me ages to stumble upon it. If you go to the top of Christmas Steps it is to your left, or go to Colston Hall and keep walking up the hill. I have found that most fancy dress and joke shops sell the ubiquitous Marilyn Monroe dress, some Elvis sideburns and then dedicate the rest of the shop to ‘hilarious’ blow up sheep and ‘rib-ticklingly funny’ penis-shaped jelly moulds. This is not one of those shops, this is actually a place to get a costume for a fancy dress party. I know. Shocking. The shop is basically a big counter and the staff will help you compile together an outfit for your night. They have lots of costumes for hire and they have a stock of accessories as well — I have several pairs of quality psychobilly-style glasses from here alone!
