If there’s a bright, exciting centre to the universe, this is the place that is furthest from it. Excruciatingly dull.

I have mixed feelings about Channings. I have been there when it’s been totally dominated by rally rally posh rugby sorts drunk out of their minds and being total eejits. And I’ve been there for a lazy Pimms on a sunny afternoon when it’s actually been quieter and a lot more pleasant. It does seem to attract all the hooray Henrys simply for its location. But you can’t really blame them– it’s a lovely spot and the garden is a real sun-trap. I’ve only ever drunk here so I can’t vouch for the rooms but I would recommend grabbing a drink here on a quieter week-day evening or afternoon before it gets mobbed with loathsome hoards. Pub food is pretty standard but it does the job.

I don’t think it’s completely fair for me to judge this place purely as a pub because it’s not, really it is a hotel and I haven’t stayed there, so I couldn’t comment on that aspect of Channings. However, I have drunk an awful lot in their beer garden, when the sun is shining, and what a beer garden!(See my photo) It is in a really peaceful residential part of Bristol, surrounded by huge trees and beautiful Victorian buildings. They also have big round tables, perfect for sitting with a large group of mates, enjoying 5 too many afternoon ciders. The selection of drinks on the bar isn’t the biggest, but it’s more than enough to get you through the day before heading out somewhere else. The food is pretty standard pub grub, not too fancy, but when the sun is shining you won’t find a nicer looking pub, on a more pleasant street, to sit outside and have a cold pint.

There is nothing that stands out about this place other than a good smoking garden, and it is just good, nothing more nothing less, good. The inside is the most generic inside to a pub, it reminds me of the Pubs from The Harvester chain. I can never see myself kicking off a night to remember here. For that matter, the more i think about it this place i think is only good for an afternoon drink.

Channings is known to the majority as the ‘posher than your average’ watering hole a the end of Pembroke Road. It has always been pricey, though owing to a massive refurb and change in management a few years ago, i swear it gets steeper and steeper everytime I end up there. One thing that really is a stand out factor for Channings as a drinking establishment though, is its beer garden. If you are feeling particularly flush on a warm summers day, it can seem fairly idyllic, surrounded by beautiful Victorian buildings. It is large and has a number of tables and benches. Though beware, it can all turn pretty sour as it can get incredibly busy, leaving many to begrudgingly stand with their drinks.

For obvious reasons I’ve never stayed in the actual hotel, though I’ve been to the bar sporadically throughout the years and it’s not changed a great deal in that time. The upstairs is a big room dominated by the bar the centre, which never really generates a great atmosphere. The garden is large and has plenty of seating, though, and is worth a look on sunny days. There’s also a cheap student comedy night in the basement which is excellent providing they have a big name on, but on the whole I’m not a huge fan of this rather Clifton Daaaaaaaaaahling drinking haunt.

This place seems to be better known as a drinking haunt. However, we stumbled across it on the look for somewhere to stay during a recent visit to Bristol. It was our first time in the city and we really didn’t have a clue. The out-of-date Rough Guide mentioned Clifton as a nice area, and that’s still true 10 years down the line. If you are looking for somewhere clean and safe to stay without paying a fortune(£70 for a double room), this is a good choice. The staff are not really prepared for touristy questions, though, no maps(which are freely available elsewhere) or useful advice beyond head towards Clifton Village for dinner — perhaps they were miffed that we didn’t fancy their food. Mind you, this was good advice, as many great places are in walking distance. And so is the city centre. PS several air conditioning units are parked at the back of the building — a room overlooking the main road would have been quieter.

Me and the girlfriend stayed at Channings hotel on the 6th of December — never again. The rooms were basic with no information about what the hotel or surrounding area offered. The staff had an average age of about 17 and went out of their way to be unhelpful. The only nice thing that I can say about Channings hotel was that at least it was clean. Would I ever stay there again? only if the choice was that or death !! I would recomend you stay at a premier inn or travelodge rather than here since the cost is about the same.

Nice bar with lots of garden seating. The beers are limited but they have some reasonably priced bottles of wine. Very nice place to go with some friends during the summer.

Pleasant and comfortable bar and often quiet at lunchtimes to have a drink and nice chat to friends. I’ve only eaten here once but thought there could have been more vegetarian and vegan choice. As happens so often in other places too, the vegetarian meals are so much smaller than the meaty ones, despite being as expensive. I was still hungry afterwards. I definitely wouldn’t bother eating here again.

Channings markets itself as the«Channings Hotel» and it does do rooms — from the people that I have spoken to it is not bad as a hotel. For most people Channings is a bar with food. It has 2 personas — winter and summer. In the winter it is a place to have a quite drink with friends and perhaps some food. It is like a lot of the bars around in that respect. In the summer it becomes a different beast. It has a beer garden that becomes full of people when it is sunny. Students, professionals and others all come to this drinking hole — it does have the clifton edge that means people can be a bit pretenious with sunglasses on their head(if you know what I mean) but ignoring that, this is a good place to drink in the summer — it has an energy and vibe about it.
