This is an off the beaten track pub with a surprisingly central location. Just around the corner from the Hippodrome on Denmark Street, business around here occasionally get overlooked by anyone who isn’t attending a musical or trying to sneak in through the stage door.
The Bunch of Grapes has a bit of an old man feel but with a little theatre character, with show posters covering the walls. When I first came here to watch a friend’s band play I didn’t even realise how much of a music venue this actually is — the bar is almost a side thought.
Live music takes place most nights of the week and although its mostly local fare the standard of talent is high. Open mic nights are a regular occurrence and if you’re in the centre and at a loose end then I would defiantly recommend this pub for cheap live music.

This place leaves me a little cold for some reason and I can’t quite work out why. Being next to the Hippodrome it naturally tries to cash in on it’s long association (even if it’s just geographically) with the theatre, as you’ll find dozens and dozens of old peeling posters on the walls, entertaining I guess in some way, but the crowd of people you’ll find in here is just a bit lame.
It also tries to cash in on the unsuspecting and less than knowledgeable theatre crowd who see a pub right next to the theatre and not knowing or wanting to venture to far, accidentally stumble in to what is nothing more than a fairly rubbish old man pub, with the occasional live act playing out back (not good live music either). I find this odd mix of old men and theatre goers a giant yawn which doesn’t help the atmosphere of the place or the prices. Very expensive.

A bit of an old man’s pub tucked away behind the Hippodrome, I’m sure that despite its central location, a large majority of the hordes who venture into town every weekend are unaware it’s here. It’s not particularly swish though this isn’t ncessarily a bad thing as it tends to keep out the chavier elements.
When you enter it seems quite a small, thin establishment with a bar, which concentrates on ales though you can get a Thatchers here, running down one side. However, when you get to the end it opens out and in this area you have local bands playing (usually older ones doing covers). There’s nothing as fancy as a stage for them to stand on, which is pretty symptomatic of this slightly belt and braces pub, but it’s a lively place to grab a pint and some free music on a weekend.

Hidden behind the Hippodrome this pub is another a less well known Bristol music venue. The blues night on Tuesdays is the places most distinctive night, bringing a little cool and culture to Bristol city centre (somewhere that sorely needs it). They have other genres on too, including a reasonable open mic on Wednesdays.
Pretty unique in letting you bring take-​aways into the place, I recommend as somewhere to wash down a good Indian with a couple of pints — don’t just come here with a kebab from round the corner. They do have their own menu as well.
They’ve got a couple of real ales on tap. This, coupled with a fairly recent refurbishment makes it a lovely place to have a drink, and I don’t think the level of business they get really does them justice. Possibly perhaps to its location, certainly took me quite a while to find the place. The Bunch of Grapes deserves a bigger reputation than it currently enjoys.

Cracking pub tucked away on Denmark Street. The people are always friendly and a reasonable open mic night is run on a Wednesday night for anyone brave enough to do it. Live bands play regularly too. This is the place where many actors from the Hippodrome go before and after their show.

Like this pub, this is where I run for a last drink after the academy. Have often been caught dancing with my friend to the live music, although no one else is. Nice and friendly, nice and cosy.

a place which’s personality depends entirely on the people there. get the right crowd and its great, dont and its just another pub that has some live music.
i hav been there when there soe real good live bands and its great. ive been there when there someone playing msic and hey ho
all said, its a freindly and safe place. for boys and girls (tho there are not many women frequenting the joint)
its a place you have to go and make your own decision

A nice pub right next to the Hippodrome. Its got a long theatrical past and the décor reflects this. Its full of posters of old plays and shows and you could spend a long time reading the walls!
Its quite a quiet pub, not one to go to if you’re planning on getting completely wasted (the hatchets down the road!), good for a quiet drink with friends!

A regular haunt for the theatre goers, this venue has lost none of its charm over the years. From the peeling film posters to the archaic long bar stretching the length of the interior, this pub always entertains me even when not hosting live acts in he back room.
A popular tourist and local pub, the grapes has charm and character in spades. It may not be the cheapest pub you’ll visit in Bristol but it wont be a forgetful experience.
Enjoy the ale and stay for the live acts.
