The perfect place to kit out yourself with a cool t shirt, skate shoes, baseball hat and a fresh set of tiptronic wheels. There’s loads of choice from the usual skate brands: Dickies, Vans etc. I used to skate on my Alley Cat way back in the day; a would be seventies Dogtown boy, powering down the school hill and ending up in the bushes at the botttom. Staff are pretty hip in here and will give you time if you’re looking to start skateboarding.

As a non-skateboarder, I was more interested in the clothes and shoes in Route One than the skateboards and supplies. Name brands like Vans, Supra and Dickies are a bit costly, but Route One had several things on offer for the Christmas season. Tops were about £20, or 2 for £35; and accessories were on offer 3 for the price of 2. The front wall displayed several versions of remote control toys: spiders, snakes, modes of transportation… But my favourite was the non-electronic Racing Nuns set! Apparently they run on elastic bands. Quite intriguing. The clothing in Route One wasn’t my style, but I’m going to keep those Nuns in mind for a rainy day…

I gotta admit I’ve never done an ollie or a 360 kick-flip. I have however, spent a lot of time watching other people practise and perfect these tricks and over the years have developed a strong appreciation for skateboarding as a sport and art form. I’m also a bit partial to buying skateboard gear for my younger, more sporty, little brother and one of the best shops to do this is Route One. As the busy windows and spraypainted doorway suggest, Route One is a santa’s grotto for skateboarders, snowboarders and BMX riders. Alongside new boards, wheels, helmets, pads and inline skates, they sell cool hoodies, sweaters, tees, jeans, jackets, beanies and sneakers. Labels include Zoo York, Vonzipper, Emerica, Etnies, Fenchurch, Vans, Addict and Fallen. For those wanting to ‘borrow’ the whole b-boy look without spraining an ankle or breaking an arm, they also sell fresh headphones and limited edition baseball boots.

People who know me now may find it hard to believe that I was once a badass skateboard, tearing it up around suburban Derbyshire. Well, maybe I am exaggerating a little, but I did more than dabble in the fine art/sport of skateboarding. There is something exhilarating about gliding down a smooth concrete road on a skateboard, pushing off with your foot every so often in order to maintain momentum. Although I no longer skate, I still sometimes like to see what’s going on in the world of skateboarding. I also like some of the board designs(works of art in themselves) and the fashion that comes with the sport. Route One is a pretty cool skate shop — though they all tend to be really! They have a great selection of decks, shoes and clothing. If you’re into skating, then check it out. If you’re not into skating but like urban(and by that I mean city, not the umbrella term used in music) clothing, then you might just find something you like!
