Reiss is an über-expensive clothes shop in the Lanes, offering some very cool looking and modern hip clothing in minimalist and artistic surroundings. Maybe they aren’t very well stocked, but there just seems to be a lot of space for even small items… or maybe that’s how cool each item is: it needs its own cool bubble, or something like that. Either way, it’s all too expensive, although it is exactly in my style bracket: modern, cool without being trashy, and a bit sailor-ish, at least currently. The main problem here is the price: it’s all so expensive that I’d be scared to wear it out, in case I spill tomato sauce on it and ruin £80 worth of sock… Maybe that’s one of my hang-ups, but I hate wearing anything out that I paid more than a tenner for, in case I sit on a greasy spot on a bench or get defecated on by a bird. Still, if I had the money I’d wear Reiss clothes proudly, they are pretty cool and right up my alley. Why is everything I like so expensive?

I am always attracted by Reiss, I think its the minimalist window displays which look cold and disaffected, or disinfected. Also the clothes always fit well and its not too crammed so you can get a good look at everything. Saying that when I wear it I feel a bit like the Phil Collins of the 2000’s, still not sure if that’s good or bad. It is quite expensive but not ridiculous. It is the most likely place I would go for that one black jumper that you need when you try on everything to go out but it all just seems to look bad so you go over to the wardrobe and say ‘C’mon trusty jumper, I can always rely on you, please last forever because you were pricey and if I shrink you in the wash I might never leave the house again’.

Reiss is another elegant dress shop in the Lanes that I can’t afford to shop in. I’m not sure whether the minimalist set up is a conscious choice, or if the shop is just larger than necessary for the amount of stock, but each item is given a lot of… space. One shelf contained only a single handbag, for example. Fashions are for both men and women, and as only a few of each item are available, there’s a good chance you won’t turn up to a party with the same outfit as someone else(if that’s a concern.) The price tags I saw: women’s blouses ran at about £80 each, and coats are in the several hundred pound range.

There’s a mission statement on Reiss’s website that sums up the spirit of their capsule Reiss 1971 range: Youthful whilst progressive Directional but not trend driven Individual but not alone Urban not street On paper it sounds like marketing hogwash I know. When you walk around one of their stores however, you start to realise it captures their aesthetic quite well. Like their competitors, Reiss focus on every aspect of the wardrobe from simple and stylish daywear(jeans, tees, blouses and jackets) and evening wear(tiered dresses, skirts and slacks to luxury capes) to high heels and accesories. The difference is, they do it with a bit more panache. The clothes are well tailored and the garmets look and feel better made. They also have fancy names like Cassie, Bella, Albertine, Farrah, Darby and Frida. I quite like their white fitted military jacket with black ribbon detail. At £149 however, I’ll be dreaming about rather than wearing it!

I love this shop — and it’s my first point of call when I want something for a special occassion. This shop is at the upper end of High Street fashion. The styles of clothes are so contemporary and follow current trends. They do not have many styles in each collection — but they change their collections regularly. The quality of the materials used and the quality of the finish is just unrivaled by any other of their competitors. The Brighton shop stock both men and womens clothes. There are always lots of staff available to answer any questions. Only downside of this shop is their prices(and why it doesn’t get 5 stars !). A dress will be in the region of £150 — £200 and even a simple t-shirt can set you back £50. I wouldn’t go there for simple everyday items. And I’d take my credit card.
