Poppy’s is a light, contemporary and colourful little sandwich bar, that manages to do enough to stand out a little in a crowded local market. They sell a range of sandwiches, cakes and pastries. The highlight here though is the paninis — they are absolutely huge, around twice the size of average and well filled(mine was a very delicious, oozing brie and bacon). If you’re still hungry, the cakes are also divine — home made and full of flavour. It’s not really(bar a couple of small metal tables) and eat in place, due to the size, but grab some lunch here and head over to the Level or Preston Park to eat it — perfect.

As the other two have said, Poppy’s is the best place for a tasty cheap sandwich in the London road area. I do like Pause Café round the corner, and that place is better if you’re looking for a more prologed sit down lunch — but Poppie’s wins hands down when you looking for something cheap and cheerful. My friend who works on London Road also says she goes there most days as they have the best menu for vegetarians in the area. It is probably best for food on the go, but they do do hot meals too, which are great value and the bright/fresh-ness of Poppy’s makes it a very welcome addition to the predominantly dreary London Road.

I would have to agree with Sophie W that Poppies is the best place to pick up a sandwich or baguette on the London Road. It’s simple, cheap, and relaxing(in the little space for you to sit). If your in a bit of a rush, and you can’t wait around to have something more substantial, whilst you also don’t want to waste your money on some anaemic little stale sandwich from Somerfield, this is the place to come. There’s also a deal going on Coffee’s too, so pop down and kill two birds with one sandwich, or stone… or whatever…

Poppy’s Sandwich Bar is simple but sweet. London Rd is a great place to do your local shopping but it isn’t always the cheeriest or most attractive of places to stop for lunch. But nestled in between the shabby pubs and electrical shops, Poppy’s offers a small but perfectly decent place to enjoy a sandwich. There are a couple of tables, but it is predominantly used as a takeaway, for lunch on the run. Don’t expect the kind of gourmet, fancy-pants paninis or exotic bread options you might find in the North Lanes– Poppy’s is a simple traditional café serving British favourites(cheese and pickle, tuna mayo, ham and cheese etc.) on brown and white sliced bread. I have personally sampled the cheese and pickle sandwich and can confirm that all was in order… fresh bread, nice mature cheddar and Branston’s pickle– tick! The food is simple and inexpensive, the service friendly– probably the best place to pick up a freshly made sarnie on the London Rd.
