I used to go here fairly often until they started to reduce the size of their portions of the vegetarian breakfast but still charge more. I think if they had said charges have had to be increased it would have been better. The staff are friendly though and the seating is good.

I regularly pass this very tasteful looking café bar, and this week I finally ventured inside it’s stylish walls. The front two walls are ceiling length windows, with the inside being altogether darker and much more a bar than café. While not necessarily where I would to choose to have a coffee, or alternatively have a beer, it did strike me as a nice alternative to the very predictable coffee shop that can be found so frequently in cities everywhere. The coffee I had was somewhere between ‘ok’ and ‘good’; not the best you’ll have, but enough to provide a kick to all those caffeine lovers like myself. The European addition of an alcoholic bar doesn’t work brilliantly because of Paris’ largely day time traffic, but if you’re coming from Sainsburys though, I would recommend Paris Café bar if you’re looking for a quick pit stop.

Situated in the corner of the relatively new and surprisingly successful public space outside the front of Sainsbury’s is a little café that has no qualms expressing that it wishes it was on the continent, where whiling away the day sipping coffee in the local town square is made possible by warmer climes and a more open minded approach to architecture. The day I went was typically cold and wet so we decided to sit inside, though it was the middle of January so maybe I’m being unfair. The interior is clean and comfortable with a pleasant atmosphere and you will get efficient service with a smile. The coffee is decent but nothing to write home about and had this café actually been in Paris the locals might put their nose up at the average ingredients to my ham, cheese and tomato panini, but for £3.99 with the coffee thrown in the price is reasonable. If you fancy something a little stiffer then there is also a selection of beers, wines and cocktails. They were particularly intent on pushing their summer cocktails, which seemed a little optimistic given the weather. On the whole this is a pleasant café, nothing wrong with it at all but equally uninteresting, you can get a better lunch in one of the nearby café’s on London road, but the location of Paris Bar might draw you in on a sunny day.

In the elephantine shadow of Saint Bartholomew’s Church, opposite Sainsbury’s in Brighton’s New England quarter, the Paris bar and café buzzes at lunchtimes but offers a low key ambience at other times of the day. The cosy leather chairs may tempt you to linger a little longer than you intended and the friendly service may persuade you to spend a little more than you budgeted. Don’t be fooled by the Eiffel Tower logo the name of the bar is taken from the anglicised nickname of the Montenegrin manager Eris who, alongside his Swedish girlfriend and business partner Sara, keeps both regulars and passing trade fed and watered. No prizes for originality on the menu(plain, cheese and veggie burgers £3.50-£3.75; Greek and tuna salads £3.50; jacket potatoes with the usual fillings £3.50) but any lack of innovation offset by generous helpings you shouldn’t leave here hungry. Staropramen, Becks and Fosters are on draught(£2.70) while Corona and Peroni are available bottled(£2.50). The sign next to the bar reads Enjoy your summer even more with special cocktails. This is not an oversight, Paris told me, it is a joke because it is never summer in England so I never change the sign.

I had such a good time sitting in the sun outside this café the other day. I thought it would be strange sitting in the square opposite the entrance to Sainsbury’s, but actually the supermarket bothered me very little and gave the peaceful square just enough bustle. It helped that it was a lovely day but I think it would be nice sat out there even on a cloudy day and the cappuccino was large and excellent– strong but with great smooth frothed milk. I was also pleasantly surprised by the inside of this café– it had lots of great squishy leather sofas and rugged wooden coffee tables that made me want to sink down and relax. The prices are very reasonable, the cakes looked amazing and homemade. It stays open late too so that you can sit somewhere comfy and quiet for a glass of wine.
