If you are contemplating a trip to one of Brighton’s growing number of ‘adult’ shops, I implore you to look past the tacky chain that is Ann Summers, and instead perhaps pick Nua. Nua offers far fewer pieces of over priced tat, and instead sells a range of more specialist items for those who are in the know, or even those who would like to be in the know. They have a good range of DVD’s, vibrators and things like paddles and ‘strap on’s’. I also love that the staff here know the products(intimately), they give you good advice based on what you want, they don’t just sell you whatever they have most of in stock.

I could never work at a shop like Nua. The sales clerk was not only helpful and knowledgeable on every product, she had no problem informing me of her personal experiences with anything I looked at for longer than two seconds. By the time I left, I felt I knew her very well. Nua is a really women-friendly environment — pretty much the opposite of shops like Lust, that are more for gag gifts and, um, men. In addition to several waterproof, high quality, reasonably priced toys, Nua also offers balms, massage oils, sexy board games and clothing. My shopping-friend also noted the discreetness of the display window — helpful for the bashful, sex-shop customer.

There are several erotic toys/lingerie shops in Brighton– largely marketed for women– preserving Brighton as a hot-spot for sixties revolutionary ideas about unabashed female sexuality. Nua is a new addition to the group– Ann Summers, Lust. Where Ann Summers aims for the cheaper end of the market and Lust for the vampish, Nua is feels more like a bright fun underwear shop that happens to stock sex toys than the other way around. Everything about is very approachable– the bright blue front, the polka dot Jockey nighties that greet you on your way in and the smiley staff. Unlike other similar erotica shops, nothing here is hidden away– all the toys, underwear and accoutrements are neatly arranged on white shelves, without any attempts to create alcoves or nooks to save embarrassment. And I have to say, it works. I felt surprisingly at ease picking up the super bright dildos! The emphasis on bright colours and cool technology and design also seems to help to shift from feeling awkward about wanting to buy something in here, to what is the best version of what you want. They have really nice underwear as well if you weren’t looking for anything gadgetty! The prices seem pretty good too.
