A great pub that has finally dragged into the 21st century! It’s recently been totally refurbished, and been restored to the welcoming pub it used to be. now serves yummy Mexican street food too

The Martha Gunn is a pretty good neighbourhood pub just off Lewes Road and I’ve been popping by for some years. It serves all the usual beers and and has a real on tap most of the time. It’s very much a locals’ pub so that may not suit some of the younger, trendy student types who do tend to live around this part of Brighton. Name after Martha Gunn who was one of the famous dippers in Brighton of old.

This has geographically been my local for a little while now but due to several stay away stories I had always avoided the urge to pop in for a pint. But with a new year on the horizon and prospects a plenty I decided to bite the bullet and visit The Gunn. Described to me as a ‘locals for the locals’ I imagine a Wicker Man styled scene, but to my pleasant surprise I found this to be a smart and sociable pub. Nice selection of beverages, classic décor and friendly staff made this a relaxing afternoon stop off. I’ve never been self conscious of being in my own company and drinking alone, so I stayed for another.

A slightly rough round the edges suburban pub near Lewes Road. It’s not the most sophisticated place in the world, and generally has a slightly grimy feel. That said, it is very friendly, with a good crowd of all ages. There is a little garden to the side, and although I have never tried the food, it is very cheap with roasts for around £6. Very much a locals pub, but not intimidating at all — I ended up dancing like a loon at chucking out time with the regulars when I visited.

Named after the famous 18th century ‘dipper’(someone who operated old bathing machines) the Martha Gunn is a splendid little pub halfway along Upper Lewis Road. Slightly off the beaten track this place is always at a comfortable capacity allowing passers by the opportunity to sit and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. As they serve cheap but hearty food it’s perfect for those looking for an eating spot that’ll treat your wallet nicely. With a darts board and pool table it’s also great for those who aren’t gastronomically motivated. If footy is your thing you’d be wise to choose Martha Gunn for your big game venue as they have a large screen and usually have plenty of space. The beer garden is another great perk and in the summer it goes lovely with a cool cider and good conversation. Certainly merits a visit.
