I love my antenatal yoga classes — they are the highlight of my week! I have done quite a bit of yoga in the past and was quite disappointed when I had to give it up on finding out I was pregnant. Pregnancy yoga is certainly more gentle than the yoga I was practising before, but it is very enjoyable and focusses on many aspects that will benefit the expectant mother and unborn baby. It works not only on a physical level, but also on an emotional and psychological level too. There are a number of classes throughout the week, at various locations throughout the city and surrounding area. I tend to go on a Wednesday or Thursday when Clare teaches. She is fantastically knowledgable on all things yoga and pregnancy, and each class is designed around the participants needs — the first few minutes of each class are a chance for everyone to introduce themselves and discuss any issues that they are currently experiencing, so each class is individual and well focussed. There is also a fantastic relaxation time at the end of each session, really allowing everyone to fully relax and recharge the batteries. Many of the postures are good for positioning, labour and birth. Breathing techniques are demonstrated and relevant exercises such as pelvic floor are regularly included. Lushtums also run birth preparation classes and postnatal classes where you can practise with your baby by your side — I can’t wait to try these when the time comes. I would recommend these classes to every pregnant woman, they really are fantastic.
