Now here’s a café I can write up without saying the word ‘typical’! There is a huge café culture in Brighton, and so many of them fall under the here’s-a-typical-Brighton-café banner: sandwiches, coffee, little else. Lix, at least offers some hot food, and some nice spins on some classic dishes(various different types of sweet croissant, yum!), all at very cheap prices. Give it a try! The Level is one of Brighton’s most famous outdoor hot-spots, and for good reason: in the summer, when it’s nice and warm, it is a perfect place to perch and take in the rays. Unfortunately, the night-time activities in the area leave something to be desired(I won’t go into it here, but let’s just say past 8 – 9, find a different way home). Because of this, you’d expect it to be a café hot-spot: suprisingly, there aren’t that many in the area, most are down the road and just into the North Laine or London Road areas. Lix is a pleasant alternative, situated just to the side of the park and offering a variety of foods for low prices. The value-for-money here is really, really good: a nice, not too greasy cooked breakfast with tea or coffee won’t set you back much at all, and the selection of sweet cakes and croissants and the like is nicely varied. There really is something here for everyone, an overused statement, but totally applicable here. If you’re in the area, and the weather’s nice, and you fancy a pleasant, cheap café lunch, you could do much worse than Lix. Pop in, enjoy the atmosphere and the food, and remind yourself that some Brighton cafes are indeed better than others!

I came to this café purely because I was too hungry to walk further, so I decided to gamble and have breaksfast here. The café itself is tiny, probably being able to seat about 10 – 15 people. I had a full english breakfast with a cappuccino, which cost me just over £5. The breakfast was a lot less greasy and cheap then most other ‘fry up’s’ you can get. The gentlemen owner is always pretty friendly, making Lix a little bit more likeable. They also sell sandwiches and daily specials here, offering things like homemade shortcake etc. Not a bad café all round, not amazing either.

Lix is a simple contemporary café conveniently located next to the Level. Since there’s really not much around this area in the way of cafes, it can be really handy. I have often been known to head to the Level with a book on a sunny day, only to be caught out feeling a little peckish, soon after arriving. Lix to the rescue– they do good coffee and delicious pastries and breakfast items, including Almond croissants… mmm. You can sit in or takeaway and they also do more substantial café fare such as sandwiches and soups etc. They are open from 8am weekdays, which is handy for those in need of a caffeine boost on the way to work. Unfortunately they aren’t open on the weekends– a real shame, as Lix is definitely one of the nicer cafes in the area!
