While you won’t be putting your money in the hands of developers, there’s no better place in the city to get games on the cheap. Solid 7 – 8 month old titles sometimes go for as low as 10 pounds, and their retro game selection is huge. Staff are some of the nicest people around.

The London road Gamestar is a regular port of call for me, if I am in the area. They stock second hand games for all the current in vogue games consoles and older models, such as the original xbox and playstations. They also have an extensive range of second hand dvd’s for sale and I have found a number of great obscure world cinema and indie movies to add to my collection for a reasonable price. If you are considering part exchanging or shifting some of your unused old games or movies for cash, then you may want to consider using ebay or selling elsewhere. They won’t necessarily offer the best rates for your merchandise. If you are just buying then the prices are about what you would expect. As with the second hand market for any items, it all comes down to what is on the shelves on a given day. Occasionally, you can find a real bargain, or pick up a title that is harder to come by. Conversely, you may walk down to a high street chain and see them selling the same game new for less. The shop is certainly worth checking out, but be informed of what is on sale elsewhere in the city first. Also, it’s worth noting that they offer a disc resurfacing service, if you have a prized game or movie that has been scratched and won’t play properly.

There are few Gamestar’s dotted about the city, all of which are pretty average. Gamestar and the products sold there are very similar to the non rental side of Blockbuster; you can get lots of second hand DVD’s and games, all of which are actually a little bit over priced considering they are normally bought by Gamestar for a very small fee. The £1 rental mentioned by Ben is also an extremely cheeky rule that is worth arguing in terms of trading legislation. I returned a faulty game and had the £1 fee deducted for a rental charge. Games Crib on Baker Street is a bit cheaper and a lot less scuzzy in side. When looking for games I will frequently compare the two shops, along with Blockbuster. On very few occasions has Game Star come out cheapest.

I’m not normally a fan of second hand games, as none of the money spent on them makes its way back to the people that made them… That said, not all of us can afford to spend our hard earned cash on brand spanking new products, and if it weren’t for second hand stores like this ‘un, most games would be off the shelves in a couple of months. Gamestar then does something that bigger chains like Game don’t do. They sell great games, from many eras at damned decent prices. I picked up a completely unscratched copy of Okami for £10 here, which is practically unheard of! There’s plenty of more modern«hardcore» games here to sleight your thirst with, as well as more one off fun purchases. And Gamestar buy back games too, so you could get some extra cash towards your purchases… But if your anything like me, then you’ll probably be happier seeing your collection grow ever larger rather than yo-yo with the days of the week. Of course, prices range hugely across the titles and systems, but with buy back deals that can be as little as £1 a night(honestly!), and some seriously cheap gems to be uncovered, you should definitely swing by and see if you can bag yourself a retro/cult bargain. Go Gamestar!

Great for buying and selling dvd’s, cd’s and games. Reasonably priced second hand dvd’s — always my first stop before woolworths because chances are you will get the same thing at half the price. Usually a really good selection.
