The Duke of Norfolk is a nice pub on Western Road. The fact that nice is the first word that popped into my head when describing this venue makes it a sound three stars. The back room is really cosy with walls lined with book shelves — books always make me feel at home. The other room is fine and tends to be busier. There are quite a few tables out the front for the smokers to congregate. The clientele are a quirky mixture and the bar staff can be a bit trendy for their own good — think tattoos, mustaches and wonky haircuts — all a bit old school now. I haven’t eaten here but I hear the burgers and pies are good.

Went in here before we went to other place on the stag night. Very nice. Immaculately clean, food good and smelt great. Prices average and noise levels were about right for me. It was nie to seethey have an open mic on Tuesdays and I’m told there are some good singers come on.

Until reading the other reviews on this place I had no idea they served food. I’m not all that surprised though. This is, in my opinion, a really underrated pub. Every time I’ve been here I’ve been treated to a comfortable drink and a pleasant time and it’s never been over crowded like all the other great pubs in the area. It seems like the only reason that I don’t drink there more is group mentality, I get a call from outside, say, The Lion and Lobster and so that’s where I go, but it’s time to rebel against this I think. With its’ outdoor seating and down to earth, retro, Bohemian décor combined with a music taste that’s as clued up and on the ball as BBC six music there’s no reason not to spend more time here.

I agree with Ross on the previous review, the burgers here are excellent and not at all over priced. The chips are also nice and tasty so perfect to order for lunch. The staff in here are ace, really friendly and welcoming. The pub does look a bit old from the outside and inside is a bit dingey but that just adds to the nice warm atmosphere. They also have a really good area at the front to sit out and have a ciggy under the heaters. Great pub!

Not a bad pub and great if you’re in the area and looking for somewhere that’s got a good atmosphere guaranteed. They go for the ‘proper pub’ look, and it works well with the bookshelves and sofas making it cosy rather than naff. They do open mike and quiz nights in the week too. It wouldn’t be my choice for the weekend, but good for a couple of drinks mid-week.

Just ate at the Duke of Norfolk with a friend and had a great time. We ordered two Kronembourgs, and two Duke Burgers — described as ‘lovingly made by our chef using 100% beef, topped with crispy bacon, melting cheese, and fresh tomate, served in a rustic country roll with hand cut chips — £6.95 -, and found the food to be very tasty, the service to be great, and the atmosphere fun.

I’ve spent a few evenings with friends in the Duke and always had a good time. The atmosphere is quite warm and friendly with bookshelves lined with dusty old hardbacks, free board-games, cool music and lived in, leather sofas. There’s also a cluster of picnic tables outside which are usually occupied by smokers and sun-lovers! There’s a small food menu in the daytime but as I’ve never seen anyone eating more than a packet of crisps, I’d recommend sticking to liquid lunches and suppers. There’s Guiness, draught and bottle beer, spirits and daily specials. I’ve drank the mojitos at full price and £3.50 happy hour and couldn’t tell the difference — which is a definite bonus! Tuesdays are open mic night, Wed quiz night and there’s often deejays at weekend.
