We have the pleasure of owning one of Daniel’s orignial pieces, «Teeming Waters 2», which we purchased 10 years ago as a wedding gift, and have fond memories of spending time in Daniel’s shop in Brighton. This wonderful and unique collection of artwork gives pleasure to all visitors.

This is a really lovely shop bursting with goodies; sculpture and marine-inspired oil paintings by the eponymous owner Daniel Laurence. His jellyfish and mackerel shoals leap across the walls, over the backs of chrome mirrors, funky lighting rigs, eye-catching mobiles and driftwood creations. My favourite — even though he didn’t make it — is that lovely bust of Zeus.

Stone vases Ceramic planters Driftwood sculptures Silver lanterns Carved chairs Reclaimed wooden tables Cow hide rugs Wave wall panels Big mirrors Glass and silver canisers Nickel plated retro lamps & Gorgeous candlesticks Housed in a gorgeous arch directly on the seafront, Daniel Laurence is owned and run by a local artist and avid scuba diver. As a result, the shop has a strong aesthetic feel with most of the furniture and accessories being made from reclaimed or natural materials. If I lived in a large house with period features, this would be one of the shops I’d definitely visit for inspiration!

This shop is mainly full of centre pieces, if you bought more than one thing from here it would probably consume your living room with its uninhibited style. There is a particular style here that I can’t quite put my finger on, with lots of wood jutting out everywhere, gaudy metal mirrors and the trees that flank its entrance it all looks a bit like Midsummer Nights Dream directed by the Snow Queen, or something. Expect a few oddities for special living room effects, lots of mirrors and some stone pieces that will probably last the next millennium.

Daniel Laurence Home & Garden is one of the more interesting galleries to look in along the beach. Whilst several are painting-based, this one contains unique pieces of artwork that are also functional in the home and the prices are quite reasonable. With stock that spills out onto the walkway, the shop contains several large sculptures and enormous vases(complete with faux plants), mirrors of within driftwood and stone frames, and lovely fountains. These are pieces that require a large living space — I imagine one item quite easily taking over my little flat. Smaller items include mobiles and hanging candle holders made from blown glass; small ceramic and metal sculptures of animals; and useful items like key and coat holders, memo boards, dishware and wine glasses. Several items have been marked down quite drastically for the holiday sale. For example, one of the huge vases has been reduced from £250 to £125, so … hang on … 50% off.(Nice work, math skills!)
