This is one of the best pubs I have ever been to! I’d never even noticed it before being taken here last Saturday night. It is so cool and everyone is so friendly. It’s full of character and I love the 3 headed hound above the bar! We had our cheapest drinks of the night here too, which is never a bad thing. My friend raved about the quiz she’d been to once, and they seem to put on lot’s of events. I’ll definitely be back whenever I’m in Brighton, but I wish this pub was in London!

Awesome décor, good atmosphere, nice and spacious, and plenty of comfy seats. We ordered nachos and were very pleasantly surprised when such huge platefuls came out. I got the veggie chilli nachos and couldn’t finish them, which for me is a good thing as I eat a lot. I’d say they were the tastiest nachos I’ve had in Brighton, and I like to think of myself as a bit of a nacho expert. All that and they were only a fiver. The only annoying thing was that the member of staff who served us seemed more concerned with chatting to the regulars than serving us, which was a shame.

One of my all time favourite pubs in Brighton. From the second you walk in you get hit by the character of the place, staring with the massive Cerebus pouncing out above the bar. The pub is a rock pub, but also welcomes anyone up for a good time. It’s nice to see Hobgoblin ale and Aspell cider on tap and they also regularly sell mead. In fact, the bar in general is very well stocked and you will certainly find a few choice bevvies if you check out the fridges. I’ve never eaten here, but have heard a number of good reviews from mates, particularly their Sunday Roasts. I tend to just drink here and occasionally play a game of pool. There is also a number of quiz and theme nights(including a pirate night) and the pub always makes an effort to give something back to patrons. There is an okay beer garden out back, but also a number of benches out front. Compared to some places, this is definitely the kind of pub you can get yourself established for an evening and it has a great atmosphere on Friday and Saturday. Don’t let the rock/metal influence bias your judgement as this is all about hospitality. Get yourself down there at least once!

My wife can’t stand this place but I love it. I think its got bags of character and the locals are a good laugh too. They serve some good ales and usually have a guest one on the bar. The staff have always been friendly enough and the pub is in no way clicky. It has such a beautiful exterior that you can’t help but drift towards a pub like this. When the weathers good its best to sit out on the benches at the front and do a bit of people watching(which is good fun in that area). The foods just basic pub grub but cooked well and won’t break the bank at all. An ideal place for an all day session!

Don’t let the terrifying man behind the bar, or even the Cerebus on the wall put you off. If you can ignore the morbid intellectual-biker décor, this is a really nice place to spend a few hours over a drink. There’s even a pool table(bikers play pool… don’t they?) and a beer garden in the back, as well as the best pub quiz in Brighton. Miss at your peril! Yes, it’s all a bit strange and gothic and foreboding, but ignore it. Let the rockers have their wall-art, you should enjoy the quite large selection of beers and spirits, the reasonable prices, and the perfectly OK food. I have a strange memory: I was here when Michael Jackson died, thus the already morbid atmosphere carries an extra charge for me. Anyway, it’s a nice pub, and their quiz is shanking. It’s a monthly(first Sunday) sci-fi themed quiz night called the Geekest Link: who awesome is that? Being a sci-fi nerd, you can probably find me there.

Just off the Level, Caroline of Brunswick is a good pub that sums up much of what Brighton is all about. Known for attracting a bit of a ‘biker’ and alternative crowd, the ‘Brunswick’ is an interesting pub that is far less intimidating than the dark exterior suggests. The drink options are what you’d expect, but the pub excels in offering both live comedy and music. There are regular alternative club nights on the weekend, as well as some very good up and coming comedians throughout most weeks. The pub also has an affordable food menu that should be enough to satisfy most bouts of hunger. The Caroline of Brunswick won’t be to everyone’s taste, but it is a nice venue and definitely should be tried before being ruled out.

The Caroline of Brunswick can be a bit scary looking with its red and black goth décor ad the enormous hounds of hell sculpture above the bar, but its actually a really nice pub. The staff are mega alterative covered in tatts with dreadlocks etc, but really friendly. They do a awesome pub quiz on Tuesday which is great for those cold winter evening, and even some covered outside place at the back.

I second that emotion Samantha. I’ve always found the staff here friendly, laid-back and helpful. It seems to me that any ‘alternative’ crowd is prepared to tolerate a ‘straight’ looking patron far more than a straight crowd would accept the seemingly bizarre. The pint of Doom Bar is one of the best-kept in the city. One drawback is that the pool table is poorly situated making it impossible to take some shots without running the risk of poking the cue into a nearby drinker’s ear and even the most forbearing of souls draw the line at that kind of thing.

Caroline of Brunswick always amuses me. Looking, from the outside, like a fairly average traditional pub, inside it’s a strange but welcoming place. Friendly staff serve up a range of standard and not so standard drinks — including mead and hobgoblin beer. It’s a popular place with local rockers with the music to match, which gives the place its unusual character. Food is good quality and great value, and out the back is a surprisingly nice and sizeable garden. There’s regular live music too.

The Caroline and Brunswick is a pub I wish I went to more often. Vastly improved from its days as the Leek and Winkle, it is now a nice, welcoming pub with friendly staff and exceptionally less dodgy clientele! The drinks selection is pretty standard but they do have Stowford Press cider on tap, which is always a big hit with me! The vibe is relaxed and semi-alternative…whatever that means. The bar staff play good indie and rock music and the place always has a buzz about it. In the summer, the garden is a lovely place to enjoy a pint, with a few picnic tables and plenty of foliage and fairy lights adorning the walls… they’ve managed to transform what was a dingy concrete area into a lovely little space. There are also a few tables out the front, but it is a somewhat less peaceful place to drink, as the road there is pretty busy. Upstairs they have a room that is available to hire and it is occasionally used for charity and student organized functions. In the summer I went to a screening of ‘The Age of Stupid’ here– the room was pretty warm and it definitely wasn’t as comfy as the cinema, but it’s a perfectly good space to put on an event like this. If it’s a charity event you are likely to be able to use the space for free too!

Don’t be scared off by the massive hounds of hell sculpture hanging over the bar, Caroline of Brunswick its actually a really nice pub with a friendly atmosphere. Th décor is gothic to say the least with red walls, sexy lady artwork and of course the hounds. Their cocktails aren’t great but the selection is varied for a pub venue, ‘death in the afternoon’ will make you feel just that. The music can be heavy but bareable, everything from Deftones to Radiohead. They have live events a couple of times a week upstairs, offering punk rock, heavy metal & comedy nights. The pub quiz is always a laugh attracting a varied clientele and the prize for guessing how many sweets in a jar can mount up as it rolls over weekly. The Sunday roasts are gorgeous and they have a shelter small out doors seating area with fairy lights which is nice for those summer nights.

The Caroline of Brunswick is a fun alternative pub, boasting a good selection of beers, ciders, wines, and cocktails, and some good food — the Sunday roast here is particularly worth trying -. There’s a sheltered, heated courtyard garden for all you lovely smokers, and numerous events, including DJs every friday and saturday, standup comedians, karaōke, and experimental and electronic bands. You’ll also find free Wi-Fi, newspapers and magazines, pool tables and board games.

There is nothing flashy about this place. Great. It’s just a good rock pub with no pretence about it. The music is loud and the atmosphere lively. Fortunately it also tends to be less of a rip-off than a lot of other places in town. It’s slightly off the beaten track, and unless you’re specifically looking for a rock pub, it seems unlikely you’ll seek it out. If you do happen to stumble across it’s path though, be sure to grab a Guinness on the way past.

The moment we walked through the door, my mate and I felt out of place. Don’t get me wrong, we were made to feel welcome, and the bar staff were friendly, but this pub was not our scene. It is quite obviously aimed at Goths. The was the normal range of lagers and keg beers, and they had Hobgoblin real ale which was a nice pint. There was a small beer garden(or smokers area) out the back and this was packed. There was nothing wrong here, but we just felt out of place. If you’re a goth and/or a student, then you’ll like this place.
