Brighton Wok has to be the best name for a Chinese takeaway in this city! Brighton Wok/Brighton Rock. Get it? Brighton Wok is very close to Preston Circus and not far down the hill from Seven Dials, so it’s very handy for lots of people. Friendly staff. I Like the Chow Mein and Crispy Duck. Not open as late as other places so order early.

This isn’t bad for a local, suburban Chinese takeaway. I’ve certainly had worse. I’ve also had better, but as this place is not even a hop, skip and jump from my house, it does remain a firm favourite. Staff are always friendly and smiley,. and food always seems to be ready very quicky if you ring up for a collection(maybe not a sign of quality, but a good way to cure a dirty sweet and sour craving). The best thing here is the enormous spring rolls –2 of them’s a meal in itself.

I’d lived near Brighton Wok for a long time without having ever tried their food, purely because a friend of mine expressed a fairly firm lack of enthusiasm for it. Recently, on closer interrogation, I discovered that actually, he dislikes all Chinese food, especially take-away style stuff. I, on the other hand, don’t. This revelation in mind, I strolled down there the other day to pick up a meal for myself and a friend. Normally, I’m a big believer in selecting your own meals, but the cheapest set menu for two, at £13.80 was really pretty much bang on the money for me, consisting as it did, of Sweet and Sour Pork Balls, Chicked in Black Bean Sauce, Wok Fried Mixed Vegetables and Egg Fried Rice. Now, I’d budgeted for £16 so it made good sense to round it all off with an order of Banana Fritters as well, bringing the total to £15.60 The meal was good, not beautiful, awe-inspiring or in any way eye-opening, but good, and filling, and at a pretty reasonable price. I normally eat a fair amount, and I still had a little left for lunch the next day. Delivery on orders over £10 is free within 2 miles, and orders over certain amounts receive free prawn crackers, soft drinks or chinese beers. I would give three and a half stars if such a rating existed, but the food really isn’t quite four-star. All in all, a safe bet for a takeaway night in.
